Happy Halloween!

I’ve decided to crawl out of the basement to post this awesome Staff Pick, even if I do say so myself. Shaun of the Dead is in my ‘Top 5′ favourite movies of all time (along with Hot Fuzz, another Wright/Pegg/Frost film). I’ve never met anyone that hasn’t liked this movie, and if you haven’t seen it be sure to check it out.

Quality: This is a P2P 720p release with very good audio and video, the release consists of a 2.2GB AVI (single file).

Synopsis: Shaun is a 29-year-old with no real ambition in life, much to the dismay of his friends, family, and fed-up girlfriend. With only a loyalty to his lazy best friend Ed, a dead end job where his employees step on him, Shaun isn’t exactly putting his best foot forward. But when the flesh hungry undead start to rise in numbers, Shaun must come to the rescue of his girlfriend and mother before all hell breaks loose. With loyal Ed at his side to fight the good fight, the two will have to pave their way through zombie ridden London as Shaun must take on the first real challenge in his life - with comical results.

The site went down at approx. 1pm on 3rd August, and we were online again at 2pm on 5th August. The reason we were given from our host is that it was a broken network cable (which obviously takes 48 hours to fix). I’m deeply sorry for the disruption and I can understand that people are frustrated, and so are we. In fact we are so frustrated that we’re going to be moving from our current host to a more stable one within the next week or so. There *shouldn’t* be any downtime when the change-over happens, if there is it will only be 1-2 hours maximum.

On a positive note I have started active development of ZeroSec v4.0, and I’ll be looking to start integrating the new features in approximately 2 weeks, depending on how long it takes me to setup and configure the new server along with my other work load.

Thanks for your understanding,
Untamed

EDIT:
PreDB is now back online

We have suffered downtime starting at approx. 5am GMT this morning and lasting until 1am GMT. We apologise for the outage however it was out of our hands. When we first got our HTTP server we had to change IPs because our host had given us IPs that had already been assigned to somebody else. Earlier today they decided we still had wrong IPs on our server, and removed them (without prior warning) causing the whole server to go offline. As the server was offline we were unable to do anything until our host’s tech department acted.

Also, our forums are currently offline. The person who hosts/runs the server currently cannot be contacted, and hasn’t been seen on the internet at all for 2 weeks. So we’re unable to provide any news on the situation until he is contacted.

Thank you,
ZeroSec Staff.

The site is now functioning again as normal. I had been awake a long period of time setting up the new SQL and HTTP servers yesterday and had passed out. Unfortunately I had overlooked a configuration in httpd.conf which resulted in mod_rewrite not working. Sorry for the inconvience, ZeroSec will be much faster now, and look out for the new features which will be appearing in the following week or two.

There are lot’s of features and improvements which are in the works, but before I mention them we would love to hear what features you would like to see on the site, as the readers you know what’s needed. Leave a comment with any suggestions you can think of, or email me at untamed@zerosec.ws. Here are a few of the new features I’m currently working on, these should start making appearances in the next couple of weeks:

Hello, quite a while since my last post, this is a “public service announcement” on the issue of phishing. We are, by no means, the only effected site out there, almost all other sites that allow comments are effected by phishing. However it looks like we’re winning the fight. We try our best to prevent phishing but we can only do so much, we need your help to improve and alert us. The main issues are:

Link protectors/maskers/hiders:
Link protectors DO NOT WORK. They do not protect links at all. All they do is cause extra work for us, and hinder people trying to use the links. Most link protectors/maskers/hiders/shorteners are added to the moderation list to try to prevent this type of phishing, however we have to constantly update the list to keep it as up to date as possible. If you spot any link protector site or similar service that isnt moderated, please message me on IRC or drop me an email: untamed@zerosec.ws

Similar looking domains:
These aren’t very common due to the fact the domains get blacklisted very quickly and it’s usually just a waste of money for the phisher. Double and triple check all links that ask for your password. For rapidshare make sure you have enabled the security lock, and your rapidshare and email password is different. If you spot a phishing domain that isn’t blacklisted please contact me or a member of staff asap.

Phishers who are caught are IP banned, and their links added to the blacklist. We’re always trying to improve security for our visitors, if you have any reports on phishing or similar feel free to contact me.

UPDATE 2: All issues with torrentdownloads.net should now be resolved. You shouldn’t get anymore warnings.

UPDATE: At the time of writing the orginal article Google had insufficient information on their attack information pages. It appears to be adverts served on some of the torrentdownloads.net pages that is causing the problem. We’ve contacted the owner to notify him of the problem and we’re still looking into this. Any updates will be posted in this article.

I’ve recieved emails from readers telling me that Firefox gives an ‘attack warning’ message when visiting torrentdownloads.net. I’ve thoroughly checked out torrentdownloads.net and can find nothing to worry about, this appears to be a false positive.

Quoting from: http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=http://www.torrentdownloads.net/search/

Of the 443 pages we tested on the site over the past 90 days, 0 page(s) resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent. The last time Google visited this site was on 2009-01-10, and suspicious content was never found on this site within the past 90 days.
This site was hosted on 1 network(s) including AS24971 (MASTER).

Upon clicking on AS24971 (MASTER) link, you’re directed to http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=AS:24971 which lists sites hosted on the same network/host which have distributed malware. So it appears that Google has flagged torrentdownloads.net because there are sites that are on the same host that distribute malware but not actually torrentdownloads.net.

I’m going to investigate this further and we will also be contacting the owner of torrentdownloads.net. Our first priority is the safety of our readers and if it is found that at any point torrentdownloads.net has distributed anything malicious, we will cease our affiliation with them. Thank you to David for bringing this to my attention.

Hello everyone, Happy Christmas to all our readers! I don’t normally do TV posts, but this was a very nice Christmas present for me as I’m an avid fan of Blackadder, and have seen all of the episodes multiple times. Set to join Rowan are the core cast and writing team who have gone on to become some of the greatest names in entertainment, both in the UK and US.

Hey, me again. Just a quick note to tell everyone that we’ll be moving boxes soon. The new box is alot more powerful and hopefully we’ll see some new features soon ;) .

The new box’ specs are:
Dell PowerEdge 1850
2x Xeon @ 2.8Ghz
4GB DDR2
2x 73GB 10,000RPM SCSI HDDs (RAID 1 (Hardware))

I’ve just finished setting up the box (uber thanks to %! (% is leet)). There will be a DNS update tomorrow, at approx. 2pm GMT to point the domain to the new server. If at any point you cannot access the site via the domain, try using the new IP: http://85.17.184.211 . If that doesn’t work either, then please leave me a message on IRC.

The move will be completed around 28/29th Nov, another update will be posted when that happens. If everything goes to plan there should only be around 20-30 mins of downtime, and probably a further 10 minutes of downtime at the weekend.

Wow, 3 posts in 3 days - a record for me. Anyway, I’m pleased to announce that ‘ihatetv’ v0.1 is complete! I’m confident that this will work for everyone, and it is also compatible with page links. Thank you very much everyone who participated in the BETA yesterday.

To enable, click this image that’s on the side bar ->

Once enabled, to disable click the image that replaces it, or remove the ‘?ihate=tv’ from the end of the URL

It’s that simple! If theres enough demand, I’ll add others such as ‘ihatetvandgames’ or ‘ihategames’ etc. If anyone has any problems, suggestions, comments, etc then please reply in this post, not in any of the other previous posts.

Before reading this, make sure you’ve read the previous post, located here. I *think* I’ve managed to fix it for everyone (Thanks to %!). However, I need your help to make sure that it’s bug free, consider this ‘ihatetv RC2′. Please could you reply with a comment, with the answers to the following questions:

Does zerosec.ws/?ihatetv work for you?
Does zerosec.ws/index.php?ihatetv work for you?
Does zerosec.ws/?ihate=tv work for you?
Does zerosec.ws/index.php?ihate=tv work for you?
What is your operating system?
What browser do you use?

Also, please keep discussion to a minimum in this post. If everything goes ok, I’ll make another post tomorrow containing my findings, and a better way of enabling/disabling this feature.

Thanks!

Hello, the ‘Webdev guy’ here - again. Ever since ZeroSec launched, there has been comments and complaints about the vast number of TV posts. A month ago we made a ‘category selector’ plugin which enabled anyone to select their favourite categories and for them to be displayed on the main page, minus the categories that they hadn’t chosen. Unfortunately, this plugin was not compatible with our cache solution, so we had to abandon it. The other day, in a comment someone again commented about how many tv posts you have to wade through. This renewed my interest in finding a solution to the issue that is also compatible with our cache - so I started brainstorming, and I’ve managed to code something that I hope will keep everyone happy.

To enable simply add ?ihatetv to the end of the zerosec.ws url. So: http://www.zerosec.ws/?ihatetv will disable tv posts showing up on the main page. To disable simple remove the ?ihatetv. Once I’m sure that its bug-free I’ll create a better way of enabling/disabling the system.

This is currently in BETA. If it doesn’t work for you, please reply with a comment containing: Your operating system, your browser (including its version) and any plugins on your browser. Thanks!

Hello - me again. I’ve dragged myself out of the webdev corner to bring you another article. This is a little old, but still worth a post. I started watching the CiRCLE release and wondered if STG had released a new 007 version, and found he had, so I’m posting it here to keep you all up to date.

Quality: The best 007 release so far - better video and slightly better audio than the CiRCLE release as STG has done some work on it. Although the audio is generally better quality, it does have a slight crackle in ‘loud’ scenes, but this is hardly noticeable. If you’ve already got that release there’s not much point grabbing this.

Note: KingBen has released his v2, which is exactly the same as his previous version found here but with the audio from this STG release. Unless you want to have people looking like theyre made of clay stick with STG v2. Otherwise, if you dont mind poor colours/contrast/clay coloured people, you might as well go for the kingben release.

Synopsis: Daniel Craig is back as James Bond in ‘Quantum of Solace’. Bond has made his latest mission personal after the love of his life, Vesper, betrayed him for a secret organisation that he and M now need to investigate. Bond’s investigation takes him to Austria, Italy and South America, where he discovers that an important player in the secret organisation is planning to give control of South America to associates within the CIA and the British Government.

I know we dont usually do news that isn’t related to releases, however I feel this is some important news that could potentially effect a very high percentage of readers. Thank you to Syk0tik0ne for bringing the news to my attention.

—————————————————————————

A German court has ruled that Rapidshare.com isn’t doing enough to combat piracy and that its filters are ineffective. The court decision of the Hamburg district court, which was published a few days ago, states that Rapidshare has to become active against copyright infringements as soon as rights holders make the companny aware of them - a rule that is somewhat similar to the DMCA in the United States.

However, Rapidshare has to do a lot more than just take down infringing content. The company also has to “proactively check content before publishing it” if there have been similar infringements in the past. Rapidshare has to log and check IP numbers of potential infringers as well, according to the court decision.

Rapidshare has been using a MD5 Hash filter to prevent the upload of previously removed material, and it told the court that it it has six employees working full time to remove infringing content. The Hamburg court however ruled that this was not sufficient because infringers would only have to change a few bytes of a file in order to circumvent the filter.

The court also ruled that Rapidshare cannot argue that it is impossible to stay in business if it would have to check every single file. “A business model that doesn’t use common methods of prevention cannot claim the protection of the law”, the decision reads.

Unfortunately at around 1pm GMT on 30th September (yesterday) Namecheap (our domain registrar and DNS host) suffered outages throughout their DNS service. Many domains were effected; zerosec.ws being one of them. Functionality returned at around 12pm GMT on 1st October 2008, however it will take a couple of hours for propagation worldwide. The total downtime has been approximately 23hrs.  More information is available on the official Namecheap forums, here.

We have taken steps to prevent this from happening again and sincerely apologise for the downtime.

Thanks,
ZeroSec Staff
