First up an apology for the lateness of this post, RL rearing it’s ugly head and robbing you, our readers of the fastest with the latest!
This is a prime example of the book being better than the film, which regrettably more often than not is the case when it comes to adaptations. That being said, Pat Holdens adaptation of the novel, indeed the time, Liverpool circa 1979 is worthy if not only for the sense of despondent energy that Holden conveys with his cinematic portrayal of violence, youth and the (regrettably) predictable and largely homo-erotic savage mob mentality that too often pervades the young male. This was a fairly violent film, but in a mentionable departure from the norm the coming of age subplot did work to some degree. Largely this is a movie that fans of hooligan cinema have come to expect from the genre that is the British soccer hooligan film and the soundtrack is “right proper”. It is a film not without it’s tender and considered moments, but has more flaws than facets. Worth a watch!
Quality: Another fine scene rip from DMT
Synopsis: Drama set in Birkenhead in 1979. Nicky Bell stars as 19-year-old Paul Carty, a bored, middle-class, junior civil servant who becomes involved in ‘The Pack’, a gang of ‘casuals’ who live for drugs, music, casual sex, football, fighting and, perhaps most importantly, fashion – specifically Fred Perry shirts, Lois jeans and Adidas Forest Hills trainers. As his intense relationship with fellow Pack member Elvis (Liam Boyle) begins to verge on the destructive, Paul finds himself plunged into a dark and violent world from which he cannot escape.
