Staff Picks

I should qualify this post at the outset as a staff pick. When I first approached Pandaking about the possibility of posting films on Zerosec, one of the primary aspects of the position that really grabbed me was chance to post an editors pick. Films that we personally enjoy and more importantly films that bring us pleasure, cinema that makes us feel…. After reading the appreciably excellent and discerning staff pick from smellygruby just the other week I thought I would ‘chip in’ with one of my own :)

My first staff pick here, on ‘tha Sec’ is the epic and genre defining seminal ‘Final Cut’ of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner a film that is indebted to Phillip K Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep ?. By all measures the film that shaped the genre of Science fiction. Despite being produced in 1982 this is a throughly contemporary and brilliant piece of sci-fi cinema that is as to date unquestioningly unrivaled in both scope and execution. With both massive head nods to film-noir and the realist, technological vision Scott succeeds where so many of his contemporaries have miserably failed. You can approach this film and think it was shot 2 years ago, thus is the proficiency and execution of Scott’s work. The screenplay is 64 bit, this shit got depth y’all. The idea of what it is to have consciousness and indeed the the visceral question of what is it to be human, are the primary vectors the film intersects as it’s fundamental axis. It doesn’t have a whole bunch of machine guns with the walls dripping blood mindless fuck you and fuck humanity “here is blood” violent feel, or some guy called Keaneo in a leather coat playing on a thinly veiled and arguable stolen premise but it does have a way ahead of it’s time digital feel and a sophisticated, po-mo realisation that has action and violence that is necessary and punctuated by a brilliant story arc that affirms an intelligent and evolved existential humanity. I won’t expand any further on the plot lest I spoil it. Please do see it for yourself and appreciate the untamed and timeless cinematic vision that is Blade Runner.

Quality: A superb Blu-Ray rip by a non-scene p2p outfit. The strength of dedicated and competent outfits such as FLAWL3SS in ripping the classics is not unnoticed. Grab the 2 disc blu ray set if you appreciate the exceptional

Synopsis: Deckard is a Blade Runner, a police man of the future who hunts down and terminates replicants, artificially created humans. He wants to get out of the force, but is drawn back in when 4 “skin jobs”, a slang term for replicants, hijack a ship back to Earth. The city that Deckard must search for his prey is a huge, sprawling, bleak vision of the future. This film questions what it is to be human, and why life is so precious

1. Inuyasha says:

p2p FLAWL3SS clearcut sucks. I downloaded their BRRip of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Never experienced a more crap rip than theirs.

2. Calvin [staff] says:

@ 1 (Inuyasha): Want a clap?

3. wolverine says:

links please………

4. er.. says:

@ 1 Inuyasha: why are you complaining for getting something for FREE???
If you want a GUARANTEE GOOD QUALITY go buy the REAL blu ray …

5. Xozr says:

@ 2 (Calvin): something wrong with a person stating his (strong) opinion about something? I for one tend to agree and never touch flawl3ss rips.

6. martin says:

@ 1 (Inuyasha):

So totally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I downloaded twilight from them too and it sucked. The screen and talking and stuff was ok but the movie was heaps like boring and had no point.

Flawl3ss suck, I agree with the rest of you gais and I will only download aXXo or STG.

7. Polex says:

@grepp
Just an FYI, the link for usenet search doesn’t search for this film
http://newzleech.com/usenet/?group=&minage=&age=&min=min&max=max&q=vmt-karl-xvid&mode=usenet&adv=

vmt-karl??

Otherwise, great post!

8. Manev says:

@ 5 (Xozr):

I would like to touch you in that place also ;)

9. grepp [staff] says:

@ 7 (Polex):

I had a ‘tinker’ and it should now!

thx for the “heads up” :)

11. aXXo says:

Flawless post from some massive p2p reencoders that are my friends

Haters don’t download if you do not like good movies AND only download from my real accounts

12. Proffy says:

Great movie + Great rip - Flawless r the best

Btw u got the info wrong on filesize - 1.23 GB not 2.1GB

I know I’m right on the filesize cos I’m a member at kingdom kvcd, as such I checked the Flawless release

13. Inuyasha says:

Hater…complainer…I am just a critical thinker, as I go for perfect, not flawless.

14. Proffy says:

Soz I am wrong on filesize - I looked at the final cut not brrip

15. Proffy says:

Btw the torrents on this seem to be dead - any download links?

16. Proffy says:

No worries - found a working torrent copy

http://www.mininova.org/tor/2673589

17. meilon says:

How about a Usenet upload or some megaupload links?

18. Proffy says:

seems torrent just died

20. Jerome says:

Please post multiple MU links please.

21. grepp [staff] says:

Given that over 163,000 people have rated this film an 8/10 on IMDB and it has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 94%, even with the usual and predictable trolling here, (both on the site and directed to Flawl3ss) aside it would have been nice for some intelligent comment on the actual film itself :D

It makes me seriously wonder if anyone has actually even seen it :P

22. Your Loving Mother says:

I can’t help you with an intelligent comment, but I have seen it, have enjoyed it greatly, am downloading it, and am looking forward to watching it again. Thanks.

23. des says:

Well, it makes a change to have an English mother tongue staff writer. Your writing style is pretty good, but you let it go in the second half… grammar, punctuation and phrase fragmenting all went out the window. Not bad for this website anyway.
The movie? Yeah, sure. A great experience. I still feel more content with the ending in the theatrical release, but the for the rest, the Final Cut is tremendous. I love the way Scott used one of the original actresses for additional takes where the character underwent fast aging. Neat move.
For me, the main deal in Blade Runner is Sean Young’s stellar performance as Rachel. She should have gotten an Oscar. She was the sexiest voice in Hollywood at the time, and probably still is IMHO. Such a tragedy that her subsequent career turned into a train wreck. It leaves me with the same sense of frustration as Cathy Moriarty’s Vicki Lamotta (Raging Bull) and Sue Lyon’s Lolita (Lolita)… one hit wonders that should have led to top tier careers, but went straight in the opposite direction.
Nice to have a BRRip for those with limited bandwidth; already picked up the 720p when it came out.
Staff picks are a good idea anyway.

24. whaaat? says:

@ 6 (martin):

OK, you say the "Scree and talking was ok" So I assume that means the video and audio were fine.

So you think this group sucks because their encoding was fine, it’s just that they encoded a boring movie?

Just learned about this little phrase yesterday, "Here’s your sign."

25. grepp [staff] says:

@ 23 (des):

Im actually from Norway originally. But I really appreciate your intelligent comments and particularly your forgiveness on my disgusting abuses of the English language here and in my “reviews”, the strengths of the second half of my review as opposed to the deficits of the first part not withstanding…

With you on the quality of the rip 100%

Great comments on the film 8)

26. docwho says:

i have the movie in 1280×720 @ 2.5gb x264
The Scene rules suck
2.1gb for 720×306??? you reach rock bottom!!!!

also 8gb for a 720p is worthless..
2.5gb ftw!!

27. Rohit says:

EVERYONE, get this copy.
http://www.mhd-hdhieu.com/2009/05/blade-runner-final-cut-1982-m720p-ltp.html

MUCH better (x264, not xvid)

28. Name (required) ? Really? says:

yes, the movie is great, saw it back when it came out on dvd for the first time, but I lost the disc, so if you have information on a SCENE released 720p or 1080p rip, with 640kbit/s ac3 audio or better, please do post it.

As far as FLAWL3SS goes, there is no need to say that the encoding job done is not as good as it could possibly have been. That’s the one constant with P2P, they have no rules to abide to and you end up with subpar rips.

And to those whose big response, to others saying the rip is bad, is "it’s free", well, consider this : rapidshare/usenet/etc.. accounts cost real money. Yeah, you might use torrents, but without a seedbox; which costs as well, that’s really slow. So why settle for shoddy p2p rips when you can just look around a few pre databases and find a pristine quality scene rip?

And keep in mind, some people like their movies in pristine quality, and if the Bluray was available where they live (e.g. outside of europe and north america), they would go out and buy it. I myself don’t have that luxury, so most of the movies I watch, I have to wait 2-6 months for a dvd/bluray scene release after they’ve played in theatres.

Ideally, even if the zerosec editors decide to post a p2p rip of a movie, they could include information about higher quality scene rips in their posts, this way everybody’s happy.

For those of you who would like to check them out..

Blade.Runner.The.Final.Cut.1982.1080p.BD9.x264-MARiNES
(BD9 can be burned to DVD9 for playback on a BluRay player)

29. The Unicorn Scene says:

Was this even originally shot at a resolution that warrants 1080p or even 720p and do a majority of people downloading it even give a fuck or is grepp just being an egotistical wanker by even posting it ?

30. aXXo says:

@ 29 (The Unicorn Scene):

This grepp guy certainly does not have access to my release account and is not an affiliate of mine.

I dont like you grepp or the scene rules you like

31. anon1 says:

@ 29. The Unicorn Scene : it was shot on film, not a digital camera, so yeh, the film to 1080p24 transfer is quite good

32. ^Rorschach says:

@ 28 (Name (required) ? Really?):

Ideally you wouldn’t exist as nobody cares who lives where or about your infantile excuses or pre teen failures or disgusting pathetic luxuries. People who have sources have them and don’t make excuses or provide inadequate explanations and money shot love so that everyone is happy and leaks scene releases.

Ideally you cease to exist…maybe that is a-light-bulb

^Rorschach^

33. DoTheMath says:

@Proffy Wtf do the math man it’s 10 files weighing in at 200mb each that’s 2GB+ NOT 1.23.

34. Dr. Manhattan says:

wow, that rorschach sure is some racist pigsh!t nazi, ain’t he? ironic how he talks about ceasing to exist, since rorschach gets vaporized into thin air by some naked blue dude. way to provide an intelligent response there buddy, keep it up! Also, it’s 2009 j@ck@ass, not 1986, wake the f**k up

35. grepp [staff] says:

@ 33 (DoTheMath):

Yup.

Pretty basic stuff. Nice film too 8)

There is a wealth of higher quality rips around but me personally, I bought the 2 disc set for 10 bucks at the local video store. Money well spent. The rip as I posted is more than adequate for most people, posting a bunch of hi def rips would just be perceived as arrogant and un-necessary, almost superfluous to the real message of the film so I guess I kind of left it to the ‘people’ to follow up on that one, think of it as me giving y’all the chance to contribute and kick it large.

Loving the comments on the film so far, this being my first attempt at a staff post 8)

36. Will says:

In June 2009, The New York Times reported that Ridley Scott, together with his brother Tony Scott, was working on a prequel to Blade Runner. The prequel, entitled Purefold, will be a series of 5-10 minute shorts, aimed first at the Web and then perhaps television, and will be set at a point in time before 2019. Due to rights issues, the series will not be linked too closely to the characters or events of the 1982 film.

37. HRSN says:

way to much bla bla man, it’s a nice movie but it also is just blade runner :P just because it’s old, ppfff

38. SO WHAT says:

so there’s much criticism concerning the rip…but what is actually wrong with the flawl3ss rip? has anybody ever thought of giving examples for their critique? has it the wrong AR or a bad resolution, is something wrong with the picture or audio quality?

OR is this just some p2pß bashing from scene members and their followers?

39. Buzz says:

Simply a stunning masterpiece of film making, let alone a outstanding soundtrack of haunting magnitude, and to think it really is that old, I remember watching it when it first came out and was simply blown away, I still watch it from time to time and it the music still gives me the jitters.

Thanks for the post Grepp :D

40. Viperfiend07 says:

@Grepp…
Last week, i thought you were a tremendous prick for the way you ripped into some of us users. But after reading your heartfelt mea culpa regarding that incident, and now this fantastic post, i have to publicly change my opinion on you. Great post! Keep them coming. "the site that shall not be named" does this sort of thing every day, with classic movies and tv series, and its a great idea, so please, keep posting classic stuff like this. It will give me yet another reason to frequent this site.

41. DonJuan says:

Blade Runner Final Cut 2008 BRRip XviD AC3-FLAWL3SS

well, i downloaded it, it plays perfect, and the file size of extracted avi is 2.07g

so thanks for a great rip

42. jack says:

720p for the win on this one. It is way worth it. They did a sweet job redoing this.

J.

44. awful says:

"this shit got depth y’all"

a pain to read this article… lots of bla blah

45. Yep says:

You should try this release from ESiR:
1280×532, x264, DTS, and 3 commentry tracks.

46. fosho says:

Great. Bladerunner is a fantastic film and should be part of every film lovers collection. That means actually OWN it you freetards. I first bought this on VHS, then Laserdisc, then DVD. Though not being a fan of Sony or BluRay I’m on the fence on this edition no matter how good the film is. The directors cut was shit also, the original theatrical release is the better of the two without doubt.

48. qwerty says:

good movie, but the ’staff pick’ post itself: lmao

49. Steve says:

A nice heartfelt editorial, but I must say that this movie is the perfect example of why I don’t pay for DVDs anymore. I paid for 3 different versions and rented another.

I’m sure this one adds very little as most of the other have.

I will say that this movie was way ahead of it’s time in cinematic quality and special effects.

50. Newtype says:

Wow… There are so many newbs posting comments here…

Anyway, thank you so much for informing us of this release. Blade Runner is one of my favourite movies. It amazes me how a lot of people fail to understand and appreciate this movie. I wish I was one of those lucky people who got to watch in theaters back in 1982. Hell, even the video game was epic, and for a movie-based video game, those are big words.
