I have always held a great deal of appreciation for Spike Lee and his films, they are both articulate and understated and are indeed testament to the power of good film. Second only to “Do the right thing” 25th Hour would have to be my favorite film from the man. Lee’s work stands equally on his ability to articulate a feeling as it does his skill in facilitating an authentic relation of the audience to the protagonists. Without giving away too much of the plot and therefore ruining the film, 25th hour is the story of choices; it is a tale of introspection, reflection and most importantly a story of responsibility and choice. Impeccable casting and a great story. Norton’s bathroom monologue is not to be missed . An interesting, exhilarating and quality piece of film without a dull moment. I hope you enjoy my staff pick :)

Quality: Good audio and video quality

Synopsis: A man has one day to put his life in order before a long stretch in prison in this drama directed by Spike Lee. Monty Brogan (Edward Norton) is a man who came from a working class family in New York. Monty’s best friends Jacob (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Slaughtery (Barry Pepper) went on to distinguished careers as, respectively, a high school teacher and a bonds trader, but Monty took a different path and began dealing drugs. While Monty’s trade has made him plenty of money, it hasn’t brought him much respect from his family and friends, and while Jacob and Slaughtery have stayed in touch, Monty’s lifestyle has led them to keep their distance. One night, Monty is relaxing at home with his girlfriend Naturelle (Rosario Dawson) when the police show up; Monty is arrested, and after a trial he’s sentenced to seven years in prison. On his last day of freedom before he goes to jail, Monty tries to make amends with his father (Brian Cox) and goes out on the town with Jacob and Slaughtery. With both of his friends facing emotional crises of their own, Monty finds himself wondering where his life took a wrong turn and if there’s any way left to redeem himself. Along the way, Monty begins to suspect that Naturelle may have turned him in, and he has to deal with Kostya Novotny (Tony Siragusa), an ill-tempered drug supplier who has unfinished business with him. 25th Hour was scripted by David Benioff, who adapted the story from his novel of the same name.

13th Floor Elevators were the pioneers of pre-punk US garage rock and psychedelia. I picked up a copy of this amazing limited-edition 10-disc box set when it was released back in June and, since it’s raining outside, I’m bored, and listening to the Psychedelic Sounds album right now, I thought it deserved a staff pick. You might also want to check out Youre.Gonna.Miss.Me.2005.LiMiTED.DVDRip.XviD-LPD, the documentary/biography about Roky Erickson’s struggle with drug addiction and mental illness which ultimately lead to the break-up of the Elevators in the late 60s. Enjoy!

Description: The 13th Floor Elevators were perhaps the inventors of psychedelic rock. Certainly they were among the very first to play it. They were also one of the first bands to suffer the prejudice of the moralists and the law. They were, alas, also among the first to pay the consequences of drug abuse. The band formed in Austin, Texas, around jug musician Tommy Hall and vocalist Roky Erickson, who had already released an earlier version of his You’re Gonna Miss Me in 1965, with The Spades. Tommy Hall, who had a background in science and philosophy and had been one of the first kids in town to experiment with drugs, was the brain behind the project. He wrote the cerebral lyrics to their songs, and he invented the sound of the electric jug that became the trademark of their arrangements. Stacy Sutherland was the quintessential fuzztone and reverb guitarist. The 13th Floor Elevators found commercial and artistic success in 1966-67, before dissolving amid legal troubles and drug use in 1969.

MELLOW OUT MAN, MELLOW OUT. So I thought I’d kick off with an ‘Editors Choice’ and boy oh boy do I have a treat for you guy’s. This movie, is the movie that every stoner movie wants to be, it’s the original the king of kings. I was amazed too see how underrated this movie actually was, a 6.7 on imdb is a joke and not a laughable one like the many you’d get from this film! This film has left me in tears gave me the giggles for hours and has found a cozy place in my top 5 movies. This movie takes original ideas, dips them into some mixed herbs, and delivers a master piece. So what? No not “So what?” I am telling you to download this film, roll your spliffs, get some pizza a big bottle of drink, spark the joint, and prepare for some hardcore giggles.

Quality: For a 1978 film, this is as good as it gets.

Synopsis: Then professional potheads Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong teamed up for Cheech & Chong: Up In Smoke, which features the drug-addled duo on a road trip throughout California; that is to say, a road-trip they hope will culminate in finding some quality weed. Instead, a series of mishaps result in their respective deportations to Mexico. Desperate to get back to the states so they can perform in their band’s gig later that night, Cheech and Chong unwittingly agree to drive a very unique car across the border — rather than steel and various metal bits, the vehicle is constructed entirely out of marijuana. Back in the States and accompanied by two extraordinarily out-of-it female hitchhikers, the stoned group meanders about in an attempt to get their musical performance together, and narrowly escapes from local law enforcement agencies on numerous occasions despite their complete inability to realize they were being tailed to begin with. The incredibly low-budget movie surprised critics, grossed millions, spawned a series of lesser follow-up films, and cemented Cheech & Chong’s cult-status among potheads across the globe.

In another addition to films that you could be watching instead of spanking it to sparkling vampires while dreaming about all the barely legal teens venting their slightly disturbing and somewhat unhealthy fantasies upon a film based upon a crappy novel collection, comes Equilbrium. POSSIBLY the last decent film Bale did before he adopted that annoying as all hell raspy american voice for the batman movies. God I hate the dark knight. Begins was alright though, but really – is the voice necessary? Seriously. If you haven’t watched this film, add it to the queue with leon, get some munchies in and watch now.

Ugh. I swear to hades, it’s only been two god damned days, and I’m already sick of hearing about robert bloody pattinson. Chicks find him attractive? Really? REALLY!?

Quality: Behold the sound and picture awesomeosity of Sean Bean and Christian Bale rockin tha muthafuckin hizzouse! Sorry. I was just listening to Coolio singing gangsters paradise. I have no other excuse.

Synopsis: In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston (Bale) is a top ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist the rules. Whe he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce the strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only person capable of overthrowing it.

You’ve probably noticed that the two things going on here tonight are jack and shit, so I thought  I’d take a minute to post something from my “make some popcorn, sit down and shut the fuck up while you watch something decent instead of jerking off over sparkling vampires” playbook. Yes indeed, this classic is indeed a film you should watch before you die – or at least, a film that if you haven’t watched, I’ll make you see before I off you myself for not having any taste and being oblivious to the fact because you spent your whole life rotting away in front of a playstation 3. This film is like… sitting in the back of a luxury car and getting head from the prettiest girl you can think of, while drinking your favourite drink, listening to your favourite music and being given a lapdance by the sexiest person you care to think of. Yeah. It’s that good my friends, this is how a film should and is rarely made these days.

I mean really, this film has everything; Natalie Portman way before she joined the cast of the shitfest that is the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Gary Oldman before the shitfest that is Dracula, and Jean Reno way way WAY before the shitfest that was the pink panther remake. If you haven’t seen this before, then take some time out and enjoy a classic from one of the most brilliant frenchman on the planet. The director used to bone milla jovovich you know. AND he directed the fifth element. Anyway. Enough of my insane rants, enjoy the film.

Quality: A Legendary film in 720p, which naturally means you can hear everything and see everything in a way that, when combined with a masterpiece like this, will make you weep. I SAID WEEP!

Synopsis: Mathilda, a twelve-year old New York girl, is living an undesirable life among her half-family. Her father stores drugs for two-faced cop Norman Stansfield. Only her little brother keeps Mathilda from breaking apart. One day, Stansfield and his team take cruel revenge on her father for stretching the drugs a little, thus killing the whole family. Only Mathilda, who was out shopping, survives by finding shelter in Léon’s apartment in the moment of highest need. Soon, she finds out about the strange neighbour’s unusual profession – killing – and desperately seeks his help in taking revenge for her little brother. Léon, who is completely unexperienced in fatherly tasks, and in friendships, does his best to keep Mathilda out of trouble – unsuccessfully. Now, the conflict between a killer, who slowly discovers his abilities to live, to feel, to love and a corrupt police officer, who does anything in his might to get rid of an eye witness, arises to unmeasurable proportions – all for the sake of a little twelve-year old girl, who has nearly nothing to lose.

Now that the US remake of The Prisoner has ended, this is a good opportunity to re-visit the original UK series from 1967. It’s interesting to see that while the remake has been given a beating by the critics, the original series is still considered to have held up rather well even after 40+ years. Standard DVDRips are available (The.Prisoner.S01.DVDRip.XviD-SAiNTS) as are the ultra-nice 1080p BluRay rips (The.Prisoner.1967.S01.1080p.BluRay.x264-CiNEFiLE). Definately worth checking this one out, especially in 720p or higher. Enjoy!

Show Summary: The series follows an unnamed British agent who abruptly resigns his job, and then finds himself held captive in a mysterious seaside “village” that is isolated from the mainland by mountains and sea. The Village is further secured by numerous monitoring systems and security forces, including a mysterious device called Rover that captures those who attempt escape. The agent encounters the Village’s population, hundreds of people from all walks of life and cultures, all seeming to be tranquilly living out their lives. As they do not use names, they have each been assigned a number, related to their importance in the Village’s power structure. The agent is told by the Village authority he is “Number Six”, and they are seeking “information” as to why he resigned; the task of doing this is carried by the ever-changing “Number Two”, acting as the Village’s chief administrator and proxy to the unseen “Number One”. Number Six, distrusting of anyone involved with the Village, refuses to give such answers while at the same time trying to learn for which side the Village works, remaining defiant to authority while concocting his own plans to escape or learn more about the Village. Some of his schemes, while not resulting in an escape, do lead to the dismissal of an incumbent Number Two on two occasions. At the end of the series, the administration becomes desperate for Number Six’s information, and more drastic measures follow that threaten the lives of Number Six, Number Two, and the rest of the Village.

Hey guys :) It’s been a slow day today in the Scene (in my opinion) and it hit me that I would like to post a Staff Pick for this month! I’ve been meaning to post this to you guys but I’ve been extremely busy in real-life. But that has past! Here I have you is a great CD from the band “Bring Me The Horizon”. Basically the band got DJ’s to remix their current album and give it an electronic feeling to it. I myself thought it sounded killer and have been waiting for this to release! Please, no bashing of the band in the comments as this always happens. So if your in the mood for some Screamo/Electronic music, check out this album :)

Description: Suicide Season: Cut Up! is a remix album recorded and produced by various musicians and producers for the British band Bring Me the Horizon. It was released on the November 2, 2009 in the UK. The album is currently unreleased in the America’s, no word on when it will be. The album is a collection of tracks that are all remixes of songs featured on the bands previous album, Suicide Season.

5th of November is today! Which for those of you that don’t know much about this green and pleasant land is celebrated as Bonfire Night, and is the inspiration for the film V for Vendetta. While Alan Moore was less than please with the adaptation of this work (or that of its cousin, Watchmen) it still stands as a pretty decent effort for a first feature film from James McTeigue, who can claim credits for work on pretty much every major franchise film running through the final parts of the 20th and early part of the 21st century. If you like the film incidentally, I heartily recommend the comic book, which is even more fantastic than the live action feature.

Quality: Everything you’d expect from a 1080p rip really – awesome sound and picture, and even better looking if you happen to have an amBX system. ;)

Synopsis: A shadowy freedom fighter known only as “V” uses terrorist tactics to fight against his totalitarian society. Upon rescuing a girl from the secret police, he also finds his best chance at having an ally.

Happy Halloween!

So I’ve been busy working on some stuff behind the scenes here tonight, but before I head to bed I wanted to post my halloween staff pick. I’m not a big fan of the horror genre, but when a big director brings something out then every so often you just have to take a look. Planet Terror is the work of Robert Rodriguez and was made as a tribute to the zombie film genre. It’s part of Grindhouse: two films that were shown back to back in the cinema including fake adverts, so if you haven’t seen this or Death Proof from Quentin Tarantino you may want to watch them together.

To sum up this is a really enjoyable movie. It’s fairly gory at points, a bit cheesy in others and quite over the top all round, but that’s what makes it work: complete mindless fun.

Quality: Quality is better than the snapshots will have you believe as there’s a grainy effect that’s on the video, so if you think it looks like a bad rip it’s not. Resolution isn’t too high however so you may prefer to try one of the internal releases, or those of you with bandwidth to spare might be better off with: Planet.Terror.2007.720p.BluRay.x264-SEPTiC

Synopsis: In Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror,” two doctors find their graveyard shift inundated with townspeople ravaged by sores. Among the wounded is Cherry, a dancer whose leg was ripped from her body. As the invalids quickly become enraged aggressors, Cherry and her ex-boyfriend Wray lead a team of accidental warriors into the night.

Happy Halloween!

I’ve decided to crawl out of the basement to post this awesome Staff Pick, even if I do say so myself. Shaun of the Dead is in my ‘Top 5′ favourite movies of all time (along with Hot Fuzz, another Wright/Pegg/Frost film). I’ve never met anyone that hasn’t liked this movie, and if you haven’t seen it be sure to check it out.

Quality: This is a P2P 720p release with very good audio and video, the release consists of a 2.2GB AVI (single file).

Synopsis: Shaun is a 29-year-old with no real ambition in life, much to the dismay of his friends, family, and fed-up girlfriend. With only a loyalty to his lazy best friend Ed, a dead end job where his employees step on him, Shaun isn’t exactly putting his best foot forward. But when the flesh hungry undead start to rise in numbers, Shaun must come to the rescue of his girlfriend and mother before all hell breaks loose. With loyal Ed at his side to fight the good fight, the two will have to pave their way through zombie ridden London as Shaun must take on the first real challenge in his life – with comical results.

I don’t like many horror movies, but I like comedy horrors, and Army of Darkness is one of my favourites. It has a massive cult following so most of you would have seen this, however I’m sure a few of you haven’t. Sam Rami (who not only directed AoD but also has directed all of the Spiderman movies) is going to be remaking the series, but unfortunately it looks like the awesome Bruce Campbell won’t be in the remake.

Quality: Standard quality scene dvdrip.

Synopsis: Ash finds himself stranded in the year 1300 AD (“as close as I can figure”) with his car, his shotgun, and his chainsaw. Soon he is discovered and thought to be a spy for a rival kingdom and is taken prisoner. After proving his merit in The Pit, he decides to help the kingdom retrieve the Necronomicon (which will also help him return to his own time), which they need to battle the supernatural forces at play in the land. Ash accidentally releases the Army of Darkness when retrieving the book, and a fight to the finish ensues.

Blessed Samhain

I’m a bit of a girl when it comes to zombie movies, but Halloween just isn’t halloween without one. I was actually torn between the George A. Romero version and Zack Snyders, but considering this is actually about one of the only Snyder films I enjoy consistently, I figured “what the hell.” While strictly speaking this isn’t a remake in many ways, it does have colourful, even loving homages to the original within it, from the mall to Tom Savini as the Sherrif giving the instructions to only take headshots, and as a zombie Blades. Just as much as Hellraiser is a film that got me into loving film as much as I do, Romero is responsible for igniting the spark that got me into horror as a genre. More so than hammer horror.

Edit: Updated with Deets on the 1978 version as well, as a poster had a fair point.

Have a blessed Samhain everyone!

Quality: Glorious 720p vision and sound, allowing you to enjoy the most ghoulish night of the year with the lights off. This is also the unrated version, which differentiates from the theatrical cut.

Synopsis: An unexplained plague has decimated the world’s population and yet, the dead aren’t dying. They’ve become zombies, stalking endlessly in a constant quest to feed on the flesh and blood of the few remaining living. A ragtag group of desperate survivors in a Wisconsin town seek refuge in a large indoor mall, where they must learn not only to protect themselves from the ever-increasing zombie horde, but also to co-exist with each other as a last bastion of humanity. Sealed off from the rest of what used to be the world, the group uses every available resource (both within and without) in their against-all-odds fight to remain alive and human.

Staff Pick Halloween Banner

As ReeGed said earlier, some of the staff will be doing their staff picks of horror flicks for you to enjoy, and well, here’s mine. Stephen King, known throughout the world as one of the best writers of our time and I’m almost sure that almost everyone who visits this site as heard of him, he’s books or the films that are based on he’s book’s, such as this one. IT, is a horror that not so much scares you but has a more mental effect on you, I remember watching this waiting for Pennywise (the clown) to pop up from behind my TV with a crazed laugh. For me also, the film contains such great acting from Tim Curry, this for me, is him at his best, enjoy.

Quality: DVDRip, audio and video are great succeeding this was filmed in 1990.

Synopsis: Originally titled Stephen King’s It, this two-part TV movie first aired on November 18 and 20, 1990. The story starts in Maine, where a small child is lured into the hands of what audiences everywhere can be assured is one mean clown. The 30-year struggle against an evil supernatural force that masquerades as a circus clown named Pennywise (Tim Curry) begins in 1960 and spans until 1990. Featured are a group of six young men and one young woman who call themselves “the lucky seven” and are the unfortunate targets of Pennywise from pre-adolescence into their mid-forties. The lucky seven emerge physically intact but emotionally scathed after their first battle with Pennywise — who is a self-labeled “eater of worlds…and children.” When Pennywise returns 30 years later, the seven are forced to remember their terrifying past and faced with the prospect of destroying him once and for all.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween to everyone! To celebrate this occasion the ZeroSec staff will be posting some of their favourite Horror films for you to enjoy (under the sick animated banner by jasonbourne666 from the forums). Today I bring you a film which I class as one of my favourite Japanese horror films. Being a huge fan of Japanese cinema I simply had to post this Takashi Miike directed thrill ride. If films such as Ringu and Ju-On creep you out, then this is a must watch for you, especially with Miike’s personal touch guiding the way.

Quality: This is the 1CD,  retail scene rip released back in 2004. Quality is average even by today’s High Def standards which goes to say something. Unlike Miike’s “Itchi the Killer” masterpiece, this film has not yet been released on Bluray. English subtitles are naturally included in the release, but spoken language is Japanese.

Synopsis: While in a bar with her friends, the teenager Yoko Okazaki receives a voice mail from the future telling the date and time when she would die. On the next day, Yumi overhears a group of students talking about the urban legend that people are mysteriously receiving phone calls with date and time of their death in the near future. In the precise informed hour, Yoko is attacked by a supernatural force in a train station while talking to her friend Yumi Nakamura. Yumi seeks out Kioto’s boyfriend Kenji Kawai, who also received a call, and witnesses his death in an elevator shaft. When her roommate Natsumi Konishi receives a call, Yoko befriends Hiroshi Yamashita, who tells her that his sister Ritsuko was the first victim of the phone call. While in the hospital, Yumi hears an asthma pump and recalls that she heard the same noise when Kenji died. They decide to investigate victims of asthma in the hospital and find the name of Marie Mizunuma and her daughters Mimiko and Nanako. They search the family together trying to save Natsumi from her fate.

I love a good black comedy, and this last vehicle (circa. 2007) from Frank Oz is a film that I can revisit time after time and still receive the same comedic effect. It’s an ensemble cast, the comedic delivery is impeccable and hilariously funny time after time. An absolute cavalcade of mania in the finest traditions that works effortlessly well despite it’s flaws, due to a devilishly clever script which plays to great effect on the passing of a patriarch. It does veer into farce and sentimentality but largely this is forgivable as it has fun at the expense of tradition and taboo.  Please do enjoy friends as next to the Coen bros The Ladykillers this is easily my second favorite comedy ever so I thought I would share it as a staff pick while we wait for the SCENE to do what they do best….

Quality: SCENE DVDRip again. Excellent audio and video quality.

Synopsis: Daniel is a decent young man, married to Jane, still living at his father’s home. When his father dies, it is up to him to organize his funeral. On this painful morning, the suitable grave expression on his face, Daniel is ready to welcome his father’s friends and relatives. But preserving the dignity inherent in such circumstances will be a hard task. Particularly with an undertaker who botches his work, the return from the USA of his famous but selfish brother, his cousin’s fiancé who has accidentally ingested drugs, the presence a moron who takes advantage of the sad event to win back the heart (or rather the body) of a woman who is about to marry another, of a handicapped old uncle who is also the most unbearable pain in the neck. To cap it all, Daniel notices the presence among the mourners of a mysterious dwarf nobody else seems to know…
