Synopsis: A man has one day to put his life in order before a long stretch in prison in this drama directed by Spike Lee. Monty Brogan (Edward Norton) is a man who came from a working class family in New York. Monty’s best friends Jacob (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Slaughtery (Barry Pepper) went on to distinguished careers as, respectively, a high school teacher and a bonds trader, but Monty took a different path and began dealing drugs. While Monty’s trade has made him plenty of money, it hasn’t brought him much respect from his family and friends, and while Jacob and Slaughtery have stayed in touch, Monty’s lifestyle has led them to keep their distance. One night, Monty is relaxing at home with his girlfriend Naturelle (Rosario Dawson) when the police show up; Monty is arrested, and after a trial he’s sentenced to seven years in prison. On his last day of freedom before he goes to jail, Monty tries to make amends with his father (Brian Cox) and goes out on the town with Jacob and Slaughtery. With both of his friends facing emotional crises of their own, Monty finds himself wondering where his life took a wrong turn and if there’s any way left to redeem himself. Along the way, Monty begins to suspect that Naturelle may have turned him in, and he has to deal with Kostya Novotny (Tony Siragusa), an ill-tempered drug supplier who has unfinished business with him. 25th Hour was scripted by David Benioff, who adapted the story from his novel of the same name.

13th Floor Elevators were the pioneers of pre-punk US garage rock and psychedelia. I picked up a copy of this amazing limited-edition 10-disc box set when it was released back in June and, since it’s raining outside, I’m bored, and listening to the Psychedelic Sounds album right now, I thought it deserved a staff pick. You might also want to check out Youre.Gonna.Miss.Me.2005.LiMiTED.DVDRip.XviD-LPD, the documentary/biography about Roky Erickson’s struggle with drug addiction and mental illness which ultimately lead to the break-up of the Elevators in the late 60s. Description: The 13th Floor Elevators were perhaps the inventors of psychedelic rock. Certainly they were among the very first to play it. They were also one of the first bands to suffer the prejudice of the moralists and the law. They were, alas, also among the first to pay the consequences of drug abuse. The band formed in Austin, Texas, around jug musician Tommy Hall and vocalist Roky Erickson, who had already released an earlier version of his You’re Gonna Miss Me in 1965, with The Spades. Tommy Hall, who had a background in science and philosophy and had been one of the first kids in town to experiment with drugs, was the brain behind the project. He wrote the cerebral lyrics to their songs, and he invented the sound of the electric jug that became the trademark of their arrangements. Stacy Sutherland was the quintessential fuzztone and reverb guitarist. The 13th Floor Elevators found commercial and artistic success in 1966-67, before dissolving amid legal troubles and drug use in 1969.

With all tracks remastered and remixed by the band’s original engineer and producer Walt Andrus, the 10 CDs that make up Sign Of The 3 Eyed Men include both the original mono and alternative stereo mixes of the Elevators’ two most celebrated albums, Psychedelic Sounds and Easter Everywhere, plus a remastered version of their swansong Bull Of The Woods. Additionally, the box set also includes the first official release of Headstone: The Contact Sessions. Recorded hot on the heels of the Elevators’ legendary debut single, You’re Gonna Miss Me, in February 1966, Headstone was originally slated to be their debut album, predating Psychedelic Sounds by six months. Also seeing the light of day for the first time is a reconstruction of the “lost” third album, A Love That’s Sound (aka Beauty & The Beast). Needless to say, each of these titles come with an impressive array of outtakes, 45 versions, unreleased acetates, backing tracks, alternate mixes and demo and rehearsal recordings. Completing the 10-CD set are three previously unreleased live collections, Live! In Texas, which features radio broadcasts, TV appearances and audience recordings from Austin, Dallas and Houston in 1966, Live! In California, Avalon Ballroom (from November 1966) and 13th Floor Elevators Live: Death In Texas, which includes the infamous 1967 Houston Music Theatre show and the 1973 reunion in Austin.

Quality: For a 1978 film, this is as good as it gets.

Synopsis: Then professional potheads Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong teamed up for Cheech & Chong: Up In Smoke, which features the drug-addled duo on a road trip throughout California; that is to say, a road-trip they hope will culminate in finding some quality weed. Instead, a series of mishaps result in their respective deportations to Mexico. Desperate to get back to the states so they can perform in their band’s gig later that night, Cheech and Chong unwittingly agree to drive a very unique car across the border — rather than steel and various metal bits, the vehicle is constructed entirely out of marijuana. Back in the States and accompanied by two extraordinarily out-of-it female hitchhikers, the stoned group meanders about in an attempt to get their musical performance together, and narrowly escapes from local law enforcement agencies on numerous occasions despite their complete inability to realize they were being tailed to begin with. The incredibly low-budget movie surprised critics, grossed millions, spawned a series of lesser follow-up films, and cemented Cheech & Chong’s cult-status among potheads across the globe.

I mean really, this film has everything; Natalie Portman way before she joined the cast of the shitfest that is the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Gary Oldman before the shitfest that is Dracula, and Jean Reno way way WAY before the shitfest that was the pink panther remake. If you haven’t seen this before, then take some time out and enjoy a classic from one of the most brilliant frenchman on the planet. The director used to bone milla jovovich you know. Quality: A Legendary film in 720p, which naturally means you can hear everything and see everything in a way that, when combined with a masterpiece like this, will make you weep. I SAID WEEP!

Synopsis: Mathilda, a twelve-year old New York girl, is living an undesirable life among her half-family. Her father stores drugs for two-faced cop Norman Stansfield. Only her little brother keeps Mathilda from breaking apart. One day, Stansfield and his team take cruel revenge on her father for stretching the drugs a little, thus killing the whole family. Only Mathilda, who was out shopping, survives by finding shelter in Léon’s apartment in the moment of highest need. Soon, she finds out about the strange neighbour’s unusual profession - killing - and desperately seeks his help in taking revenge for her little brother. Léon, who is completely unexperienced in fatherly tasks, and in friendships, does his best to keep Mathilda out of trouble - unsuccessfully. Now, the conflict between a killer, who slowly discovers his abilities to live, to feel, to love and a corrupt police officer, who does anything in his might to get rid of an eye witness, arises to unmeasurable proportions - all for the sake of a little twelve-year old girl, who has nearly nothing to lose.

Show Summary: The series follows an unnamed British agent who abruptly resigns his job, and then finds himself held captive in a mysterious seaside “village” that is isolated from the mainland by mountains and sea. The Village is further secured by numerous monitoring systems and security forces, including a mysterious device called Rover that captures those who attempt escape. The agent encounters the Village’s population, hundreds of people from all walks of life and cultures, all seeming to be tranquilly living out their lives. As they do not use names, they have each been assigned a number, related to their importance in the Village’s power structure. The agent is told by the Village authority he is “Number Six”, and they are seeking “information” as to why he resigned; the task of doing this is carried by the ever-changing “Number Two”, acting as the Village’s chief administrator and proxy to the unseen “Number One”. Number Six, distrusting of anyone involved with the Village, refuses to give such answers while at the same time trying to learn for which side the Village works, remaining defiant to authority while concocting his own plans to escape or learn more about the Village. Some of his schemes, while not resulting in an escape, do lead to the dismissal of an incumbent Number Two on two occasions. At the end of the series, the administration becomes desperate for Number Six’s information, and more drastic measures follow that threaten the lives of Number Six, Number Two, and the rest of the Village.

So I’ve been busy working on some stuff behind the scenes here tonight, but before I head to bed I wanted to post my halloween staff pick. I’m not a big fan of the horror genre, but when a big director brings something out then every so often you just have to take a look. Planet Terror is the work of Robert Rodriguez and was made as a tribute to the zombie film genre. It’s part of Grindhouse: two films that were shown back to back in the cinema including fake adverts, so if you haven’t seen this or Death Proof from Quentin Tarantino you may want to watch them together.

To sum up this is a really enjoyable movie. It’s fairly gory at points, a bit cheesy in others and quite over the top all round, but that’s what makes it work: complete mindless fun.

Quality: Quality is better than the snapshots will have you believe as there’s a grainy effect that’s on the video, so if you think it looks like a bad rip it’s not. Resolution isn’t too high however so you may prefer to try one of the internal releases, or those of you with bandwidth to spare might be better off with: Planet.Terror.2007.720p.BluRay.x264-SEPTiC

I’ve decided to crawl out of the basement to post this awesome Staff Pick, even if I do say so myself. Shaun of the Dead is in my ‘Top 5′ favourite movies of all time (along with Hot Fuzz, another Wright/Pegg/Frost film). I’ve never met anyone that hasn’t liked this movie, and if you haven’t seen it be sure to check it out.

Quality: This is a P2P 720p release with very good audio and video, the release consists of a 2.2GB AVI (single file).

Synopsis: Shaun is a 29-year-old with no real ambition in life, much to the dismay of his friends, family, and fed-up girlfriend. With only a loyalty to his lazy best friend Ed, a dead end job where his employees step on him, Shaun isn’t exactly putting his best foot forward. I don’t like many horror movies, but I like comedy horrors, and Army of Darkness is one of my favourites. It has a massive cult following so most of you would have seen this, however I’m sure a few of you haven’t. Sam Rami (who not only directed AoD but also has directed all of the Spiderman movies) is going to be remaking the series, but unfortunately it looks like the awesome Bruce Campbell won’t be in the remake.

Quality: Standard quality scene dvdrip.

Synopsis: Ash finds himself stranded in the year 1300 AD (”as close as I can figure”) with his car, his shotgun, and his chainsaw. Soon he is discovered and thought to be a spy for a rival kingdom and is taken prisoner. After proving his merit in The Pit, he decides to help the kingdom retrieve the Necronomicon (which will also help him return to his own time), which they need to battle the supernatural forces at play in the land. Ash accidentally releases the Army of Darkness when retrieving the book, and a fight to the finish ensues.

I’m a bit of a girl when it comes to zombie movies, but Halloween just isn’t halloween without one. I was actually torn between the George A. Romero version and Zack Snyders, but considering this is actually about one of the only Snyder films I enjoy consistently, I figured “what the hell.” While strictly speaking this isn’t a remake in many ways, it does have colourful, even loving homages to the original within it, from the mall to Tom Savini as the Sherrif giving the instructions to only take headshots, and as a zombie Blades. Just as much as Hellraiser is a film that got me into loving film as much as I do, Romero is responsible for igniting the spark that got me into horror as a genre. More so than hammer horror.

Edit: Updated with Deets on the 1978 version as well, as a poster had a fair point.

As ReeGed said earlier, some of the staff will be doing their staff picks of horror flicks for you to enjoy, and well, here’s mine. Stephen King, known throughout the world as one of the best writers of our time and I’m almost sure that almost everyone who visits this site as heard of him, he’s books or the films that are based on he’s book’s, such as this one. IT, is a horror that not so much scares you but has a more mental effect on you, I remember watching this waiting for Pennywise (the clown) to pop up from behind my TV with a crazed laugh. For me also, the film contains such great acting from Tim Curry, this for me, is him at his best, enjoy.

Quality: DVDRip, audio and video are great succeeding this was filmed in 1990.

Synopsis: Originally titled Stephen King’s It, this two-part TV movie first aired on November 18 and 20, 1990. The story starts in Maine, where a small child is lured into the hands of what audiences everywhere can be assured is one mean clown. The 30-year struggle against an evil supernatural force that masquerades as a circus clown named Pennywise (Tim Curry) begins in 1960 and spans until 1990. Featured are a group of six young men and one young woman who call themselves “the lucky seven” and are the unfortunate targets of Pennywise from pre-adolescence into their mid-forties. The lucky seven emerge physically intact but emotionally scathed after their first battle with Pennywise — who is a self-labeled “eater of worlds…and children.” When Pennywise returns 30 years later, the seven are forced to remember their terrifying past and faced with the prospect of destroying him once and for all.

Happy Halloween to everyone! To celebrate this occasion the ZeroSec staff will be posting some of their favourite Horror films for you to enjoy (under the sick animated banner by jasonbourne666 from the forums). Today I bring you a film which I class as one of my favourite Japanese horror films. Being a huge fan of Japanese cinema I simply had to post this Takashi Miike directed thrill ride. If films such as Ringu and Ju-On creep you out, then this is a must watch for you, especially with Miike’s personal touch guiding the way.

Quality: This is the 1CD,  retail scene rip released back in 2004. Quality is average even by today’s High Def standards which goes to say something. Unlike Miike’s “Itchi the Killer” masterpiece, this film has not yet been released on Bluray. English subtitles are naturally included in the release, but spoken language is Japanese.

Synopsis: While in a bar with her friends, the teenager Yoko Okazaki receives a voice mail from the future telling the date and time when she would die. On the next day, Yumi overhears a group of students talking about the urban legend that people are mysteriously receiving phone calls with date and time of their death in the near future. In the precise informed hour, Yoko is attacked by a supernatural force in a train station while talking to her friend Yumi Nakamura. Yumi seeks out Kioto’s boyfriend Kenji Kawai, who also received a call, and witnesses his death in an elevator shaft. When her roommate Natsumi Konishi receives a call, Yoko befriends Hiroshi Yamashita, who tells her that his sister Ritsuko was the first victim of the phone call. While in the hospital, Yumi hears an asthma pump and recalls that she heard the same noise when Kenji died. They decide to investigate victims of asthma in the hospital and find the name of Marie Mizunuma and her daughters Mimiko and Nanako. They search the family together trying to save Natsumi from her fate.
