Blessed Samhain

I’m a bit of a girl when it comes to zombie movies, but Halloween just isn’t halloween without one. I was actually torn between the George A. Romero version and Zack Snyders, but considering this is actually about one of the only Snyder films I enjoy consistently, I figured “what the hell.” While strictly speaking this isn’t a remake in many ways, it does have colourful, even loving homages to the original within it, from the mall to Tom Savini as the Sherrif giving the instructions to only take headshots, and as a zombie Blades. Just as much as Hellraiser is a film that got me into loving film as much as I do, Romero is responsible for igniting the spark that got me into horror as a genre. More so than hammer horror.

Edit: Updated with Deets on the 1978 version as well, as a poster had a fair point.

Love these posts you’ve been putting up lately!

And as far as the original versus the remake goes….well, it is true that you wouldn’t have one without the other. I own both versions but I have to admit that I find myself watching the remake more than the original. Some remakes actually do make for a more entertaining experience although it is extremely rare. Out.

my favourite movie of all time
that aspect ratio kinda ruins it tho - I bought the fullscreen 4:3 version on dvd so I can crop to 16:9 and watch in proper widescreen , much better

War, yes - doing a "Staff Pick" at a video store has always been an ego thing, basically suggesting you know more than the people coming to visit your site. Which might actually be the case… nevertheless, it’s still an ego thing.

Pingu, THANK YOU for Pontypool. 0 Second is a really hard name to live up to. In some ways they deserve the criticism for not posting immediately with a name like that but the reality is we have to cut them a little slack. I’m sure it’d be be posted here eventually.

why’s it funny :s
if you compare the fullscreen 4:3 versions of movies you’ll see that they show alot more of the picture vertically ( how it was originally filmed before they cropped it for theatrical version ) looks awful when they overcrop it down to 2.35

@jenny I don’t assume for a second I know more than anyone else, but what I DO know I have, for the most part is good taste in film that luckily most people enjoy. What’s wrong with adding staff picks if it brightens up the site? Of course, there’s always the philosophy that if you don’t like what we have to say, then don’t come to the site - but then, everyone’s a critic these days aren’t they? Nice example here, I post the 720p rip because in the case of zack snyder’s version I personally believe the resolution DOES make a difference, and yet above me someone’s even found reason to complain about that.

It really is true that you can’t make everyone happy, so I generally don’t even try to.

Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead is great, period. Definitely in my top 5 zombie films of all-time, along with Romero’s. These are some excellent Halloween releases, guys. Many film junkies own them already, but for those who haven’t seen them GET ON IT!

Pontypool was indeed very pleasant surprise, another recommended watch. (There have been a few fine DVDRips out for a while.)

War, If you re-read what I wrote I never suggested you shouldn’t do a Staff Pick or that it was wrong to do one. It’s your site - do what you damn well please. But there is no denying that it has something to do with the ego. Hell, if this was my site, I’d probably do one everyday. My ego knows no bounds.
