Google announced Chrome OS just couple days ago. It is time to try it out for yourself. By the looks, it is a linux kernel with a Chrome browser on top of it (I didn’t really read all that much about it). The idea behind the OS is that nothing gets stored on the computer locally but all data goes on the web services. This is probably ideal for netbooks and people who do nothing more than browse the internet. There are loads of them! It would make a lightweight netbook with nothing more than motherboard, screen, keyboard and a touchpad. Chrome OS could even go on your touch screen kitchen computer. Now that YouTube supports 1080p videos it could even make some sort of DVR/streamer device. Google Docs catching up to Microsoft Office (as announced by Google) I can see how Google is bringing all their services together. In my opinion, there are quite a few uses for Chrome OS. Read more for screenshots, download links to VMware hard drive image and how to run it on your computer.

Description: Google Chrome OS is a project by Google Inc. to develop a lightweight computer operating system devoted to using the World Wide Web. Announced on July 7, 2009, it is set to have a publicly available stable release during the second half of 2010. The Linux-based operating system will sport a graphical user interface based on Google’s Chrome web browser and will run on systems with either x86 or ARM processors. Chrome OS is designed for netbooks and is thus separate from the Android operating system, which was designed primarily for use on smartphones, with support for conventional applications running on the device. The Chrome OS user interface will take a minimalist approach, much like the company’s Chrome web browser, and will rely solely on cloud computing, with all applications residing on remote servers, rather than on the device itself. Hence Chrome OS is aimed at users who spend most of their computer time on the Internet.

What is Chrome OS?

Best described by Youtube video - watch it here.

Instructions for running on VMware

1. Create a new Virtual Machine.
2. Select OS Linux/Ubuntu.
3. Create a blank hard drive (doesn’t matter what size since it is gonna be removed).
4. Extract the *.vmdk file to a folder.
5. Go to virtual machine properties and remove the hard drive created by the VMware wizard.
6. Add vmdk file as a new hard drive (in advanced options it should be IDE 0:0).
7. Boot

Download: GDGT
You can get Chrome OS version build by GDGT at the link above. You will need to create an account on their website in order to download VMware image. This build will require to login with your Google account credentials.

Download: The Pirate Bay
A torrent file of Chrome OS built on 11/19/2009. I recommend downloading this one since it has a local user account “mark” enabled (no password). All it does is allow you to login without a Google account. This is described in the build documentation. Shared user password (for sudo, etc is ‘chromeos’).

Certainly something that I will look at under a virtual install, google is doing a bunch of interesting and innovative things.

All your data are belong to us!

7. Blizza Monkey says:

any move in getting people away from windows and internet explorer deserves a medal. This isn’t for me but innovative and might suit some people to a T.

8. mmd says:

I’ll stick to opera and firefox…

9. Biffo says:

At #2 and #3 and #6. Goes for me too.

10. HAHAHA says:

There is no way this is getting close to my pc, in fact anything from google…

11. PhaNTOM says:

If it does save all the porn related data packets from my computer it will most definitely crash their servers. Forever.

13. thom says:

@ 7 (Blizza Monkey): why?

14. hitchi says:

I’m with #2 #3 #6 #9

15. hitchi says:

@13 thom

Because windoze sucks. But cloud computing sucks more, so it shouldn’t apply. :)

16. Meanie says:

@12
pass doesnt work :(

17. Blizza Monkey says:

@13 thom windows is a heap of steaming shite, internet explorer ruins websites meaning that I have to tweak every website that I make to work on it, microsoft office is the only app that gives me trouble on my mac and it just makes life hard for soo many people, and the sad thing is they don’t know any different.

My friend and colleague, a hardcore PC fan has just gone over to Ubuntu and is loving it. Death to Windows and please imprison and torture anyone that has had anything to do with internet explorer.

Guttsy move by Google taking a hit at windows - good on ‘em.

@11. PhaNTOM - hysterical, and the fundamental flaw in the whole thing!!

1984 here we come!

18. Newtype says:

Microsoft Office has always been a load of crap. Especially now. It’s too complex, too heavy, too annoying (constant updates) and the interface is far from practical.

19. rkl says:

I’m really struggling to work out what Google Chrome OS will have that can’t be done with a netbook, laptop or desktop with a browser (not necessarily the Google Chrome browser either). The only way Google could gain an advantage, surely, is to close-source some major part of the OS so that it has a commercial advantage over any old machine+Linux.

Not being able to run local apps and being heavily reliant on a Net connection (with only very limited use if your connection drops) seems like a step backwards in my book. Never mind all the draconian limits Google want to put in to tie hardware to the OS (only SSDs for example, which again begs the question how do you access all your [possibly paid-for] media if your connection dies - SSDs won’t be big enough to store a couple hundred GBs and that’s only 40-odd high-def movies even if they’ve been re-compressed to 4.4GB each). Never mind that mobile connections are nowhere near good enough to stream hi-def content yet either.

Sorry, but I’m stifling a big yawn about this - people are only excited about it because of the Google brand name. It seems to have some serious disadvantages and no obvious advantage over a plain Windows/Linux netbook at all from what I can see.

20. network engineer says:

I guess nobody mentioned that Windows-bashing played out in 1995. I deal with XP, Vista, Debian, Suse, and OSX. That is also the order from most stable to least stable. It’s too bad 99% of the people with derogatory comments have no clue what they’re talking about. ESPECIALLY when it comes to "security".

Now on to the Google OS… Store all my personal data on web servers? HELL NO. And you’re a damned fool if you think that isn’t monitored.

21. Peggle says:

@ 18 (Newtype): IKR! What the fuck is this ribbon shit? Seems to me the damn things has got more complicated and less accessible with every single iteration. I can’t even use the basic functions of Word anymore…

22. enjoyandshutup says:

whats the chance of everyone just trying something NEW ! maybe shut up with all this useless comments , ITS FREE

23. hitchi says:

@19

I agree that the cloud is bad, but you’re a dam fool if you think proprietary software in general doesn’t bring any privacy problems.

25. wibble says:

arg! pass is: http://www. pcseven .com (no spaces), no http://

26. wibble says:

stupid comment system keeps adding http:// to the front of 3 w’s…

28. Rizwan Asif says:

windows has its unique place what games you will play on chrome os? stone age games infact! what will be the use of your computer? no dvds, no games? no privacy? and you need really fast internet for better experience.

29. hitchi says:

That’s right, windows is a glorified gaming console.

30. War [staff] says:

Things to consider when choosing chromium:

1.) it’s really only good for a netbook option
2.) It’s not like it’s going to half HALF the usability of Windows or even for that matter, OSX
3.) Are you really, honestly and truthfully comfortable trusting a company that retains data for an unspecified amount of time, regardless of the time restraints they say the put on data retention.

31. Gogle Rock But says:

but what is up with our data being saved on their hd this doesnt seem good
so your chrome will be basiclley upload everything and if u dont have internet it,s useless
i hope they consider the online option

33. oioioi says:

Anyone who puts any important personal information on any puta which connects to the web has endangered their security. Sure windoze security is tighter than a snappers butt for keeping Uri from the Urals or Aziz from egypt outta your stuff but since 2002 every encryption/security system marketed in the US has included a back door, ostensibly to catch terra-ists and drug runners but in reality anyone who gets chosen. Your data is probably being mined right now, not to target you personally but just so a running profile of your demographic keeps your ‘betters’ informed of likely ‘anomalies’.
So when it comes to pointing the finger at google or chrome I’ve got to laugh.
There was a big fuss kicked up in the media when google acquiesed to the Chinese govts demands but what they didn’t bother to emphasise was that Google was the last major software and services company to crack, M$, IBM (hell IBM merged with a chinese govt corporation) Yahoo and all the other search engines/web platforms had agreed to the chinese demands years before. Google hung out for an extra two years and the other corporations took revenge on Google for making em look bad by blowing up the news of Google’s surrender.
Google’s not pure - none of them are and anyone who trusts any of the software combines deserves what they get, but that said there is much to be gained for sensible people who choose to run Chrome on a virtual machine.
most of the traces can be obliterated with the destruction of the VM. The rest is in the cloud sure but mining that data isn’t so easy if you are careful. I don’t know about you guys but I grabbed a mob of google accounts back when they were begging us to take them. Even now (especially with a VM and MAC spoofing) getting a few extra gmail accounts is easy.
Smart fellas are doing in now before it gets harder.

34. hitchi says:

There are a lot of companies pushing for the cloud, being it IBM, Microsoft and Google the most notables.I’m sure it will work fine(not right now, with the current global internet speeds). But the privacy issues remain, they want data, they want a lot of data.

35. Ross Kemp says:

@ 11 (PhaNTOM):

Google OS is not for the PORN lovers.

All my PORN searches saved forever on Google servers.

Hell No!

36. WAKE UP !! says:

Hey first of all, thnsk for the news update :)
Second …. NO WAY !!
lol

I still want to preserve what it’s left of my privacy and my personal Data , no in "X whatever server" ready to be Hacked by a Bad guy.

and by the way Chrome SUCKS !! slow as hell and a stupid design as well.

The adds of Google seems are directed to the dumbest ppl. on earth !!

SAY NO To THAT STUPID IDEA !!

OMFL.

Do Google think we’re really DUMB of WDF ?!! LOL

NO WAY downloading that CRAP….

PERIOD !!

37. sir_dakz03 says:

Hell no to cloud computing. I won’t take even a million dollars just to put my data on to the clouds they’ve been building. And yeah, Google Chrome OS is indeed suitable for netbook, nettop or just surfing PC’s. Yes, it might be internet oriented, but the technology of computers didn’t start on having its main functions on the internet. Internet served only for convenience in doing PC applications, but not solely on internet. I guess the only thing the OS is good at will be.. browsing…

38. jackalope says:

well… since i don’t have very important files, i think i’m gonna try this chrome.

39. thom says:

I love these anti-windows comments, do you people have a clue what you are talking about?

@ 17 (Blizza Monkey): You obviously don’t code according to WC3 Validators, I used to have that problem with internet explorer - like several years ago when I was about 13. Yes I don’t use Internet Explorer but have you even tried the latest version in Windows 7? Runs as smoothly as Firefox + even has a compatibility system to try help old-websites. AND at the end of the day - Windows is set-up so that if you don’t like something like Internet Explorer - how many options do you have?

Using Internet Explorer to criticise Windows in this day and age pretty much shows you really don’t know much.

You whine about the sad thing being people not knowing any different - how many people use computers? When you leave the house and, say, have to go food shopping - do you whine about there being too many people there who say can’t be bothered to go to a cheaper place 5 mins down the road etc… You can apply that ridiculous argument for anything, at the end of the day - if it annoys someone so much they can easily search for another Office suite (e.g. OpenOffice, that’s so hard to find isn’t it?) as well as use the Online Google apps that have been available. If people don’t like it they can easily find a replacement, but people like you, find its much easier to whine and like to think you’re not sheep following the flock.

Your friend, a hardcore PC fan just moved to ubuntu and, therefore, Windows is terrible? Argh I can’t believe I waste so much time on people like you but such ignorance really irritates me. As a computer science student, I guess i’d consider myself a pretty damn hardcore computer user and have been for the past 8-10 years now. I started on Windows 95, have fucked up countless computers from being young and testing foolish things - but the great thing - I’ve hardly been through many physical machines because I can so reinstall Windows and all its software so easily. Sure they’ve arguable got into such a strong position from some nasty business techniques, but welcome to the business world. Go suck your rip-off mac, who if were in Windows position a decade ago, wouldn’t have had such a great open community with computing, they want their users being locked into the Mac-style of computing so they can hardly escape.

Guttsy move by Google taking a hit at windows - good on ‘em.
@ 15 (hitchi): What OS do you use then?

40. Computer User says:

They are planning (sometimes in the not so distant future) to make nearly all Cities in England WIFI Cabaple for free (limited download though). They are already attempting to install hardware devices in one city here as a test and make the whole city WIFI enabled so that users can get internet anywhere and everywhere, even in the toilet if your that sad to log on there lol.

I guess Google are moving inline with this concept of globalizing this idea. Then that would be good for portable computers only, but only if they were just terminal type laptops/Notebooks. As it would be pointless having an expensive laptop where nearly all the resources were wasted. best just get a mobile phone with a large screen; that will do it.

I am a P.C Engineer, yet I hate Windows; which is Ironic because that is the only OS I will use. I will only ever use Chrome OS as a terminal to access the web when out and about nothing more. I will keep all my privacy thank you very much. Even if Windows already spy on every user that uses either Vista or Windows 7 (never had that with XP). I just disable all outgoing connections to microsoft and any incomming ones so they can’t spy on me and go through my files.

41. Blizza Monkey says:

@ thom - you say you love these anti-windows comments and then you go and have a big tantrum. Sorry I wasn’t coding websites at 13 I must have been outside having fun with all the other children. Fkin nerd.

OK, you know a lot more about all this fascinating stuff, so I apologise for having an opinion on something i haven’t done a degree in - oh but I have! I have been using a computer for ten years now, for my degree and now my job and you know what? Windows is a heap of shit, especially IE and if you think it’s just me then go to css-discuss and ask the guys there (oh yeh, I use the mailing list so that I can code correctly. Now who is the ignorant assumption making tool?).

Getting back to IE. Windows 7 is very recent. i read a nice article about how if microsoft screwed it up again (vista was a shambles) they might be facing their downfall. But hey, I know everyone has upgraded to 7 by now, and that people aren’t still using IE6 and 7? Look at the statistics you tool. Talk to me about coding standards and that being what IE is about? Can you hear yourself or are you really this deluded?

It’s a computer, it’s an OS, I wasn’t insulting your mother so keep you knickers on!

I have never crashed my computer, i have never broken the machine. You have. I stated my opinion, you had a tantrum and started throwing insults.

How do you like them apples?

(P.S. I smiled when i read how upset you got - little bitch)

44. redspinner says:

Go Google.
I’ll try it.
