2. faceoff says:

this is 32-bit and 64-bit or just 32-bit

3. maD says:

You can upgrade XP to Vista Ultimate, or do a full fresh install :)

4. danyo says:

but i would rather not! ;-)
Never change a runing system .. escpecially not with vista! (just my oppinion)

5. lol says:

@ danyo

Yeah your right you should just skip Vista and go straight to Windows Mojave. I heard its way better!

6. chujowo says:

Leave XP alone. If it works fine, stay with it, dude!

7. @2 faceoff says:

x86 = 32bit
x64 = 64bit
;)

8. ljubaznikomsija says:

My opinion is, if you NEED 64bit OS go for Vista, if you are not in need, stay with XP.
Vista is very good, but just as x64.

9. Eagle says:

Please post the 64bit version also. Ty

13. Over [staff] says:

I recently upgraded from XP PRO SP3 to ViSTA BUSiNESS and then from BUSiNESS to ULTiMATE works like a charm and i REALLY love vista suddenly, its cool but u srsly need atleast 2gb of ram and a dualcore (imo)

14. Wahreez says:

If your using your rig for gaming and your considering upgrade to Vista just make sure you’ve got the extra ram to handle it, 3GB plus or you’ll likely experience a drop in your gaming performance. Also in order to successfully utilize 4 gigs of ram you’ll need to use Vista x64.

15. Sergei Gamburg says:

Haha, I wonder if there actually are morons who would willingly switch to Vistass.

16. FudgePacker says:

Using Vista is like being Gay..
Don’t knock it till you try it..

17. heheeh says:

This is a good setup if you want to game.

9950 Quad @ 3.5ghz
8GB Ram
4850X2
4TB drive(s)

IF you dont game, then use XP with 3GB of 1066. Yeah, we are slaves to DX10, but ya know? I got better things to worry about in REAL life.

18. SirMoMo says:

@ 17 (heheeh):

Those specs are just overkill, half of that works just fine for nowadays games. Game developers can’t expect every gamer to have monster machines, figuratively speaking. It’s too costly and won’t sell any games.

19. Kevin says:

Worst operating system ever. Only download if your a gamer and realy want dx10 graphics… and even then hesitate.

If you do download it http://www.maximumpc.com/article/windows_vista_survival_guide .

The new windows is about 1000 times better, but won’t realy be finished for a while. If you have xp and arn’t a hardcore gamer (with a mega homebake rig or alienware- voodoo) keep it. XP is a solid system.

20. Auroraz says:

Ive been using vista 64bit (legit ver) over 1½ year now, have had 0 problems at all.

Seriously, 1½ year running without issues, and its worst OS ever ? i dont see it.

I love it, i dont see what the issue is with everyone hating vista (think its a urban legend tbh).

21. Kevin says:

Those specs weren’t overkill. They won’t even run Crysis 1 on its highest settings (the second one is actualy more conservative on power while looking better). Also the saphire isn’t compatable with all games…those two core graphics chips can be problematic- threading wise.

Think ahead people… but not too far ahead… not raytracing gpgpu ahead, think of building a system you can live with for 5 years - with minimal upgrading and overclocking.

Building a cheaper computer isn’t a better deal if you have to replace it in half the time. Shop like your buying a good suit.

22. Kevin says:

Auroraz, try running it on a laptop that costs less than one thousand dollars… vista is a real consumer. It wasts so much potential power looking pretty and doing nothing. Look at the box for a dx9 game (left4 dead for example) and you will often see two sets of system requirements, one for vista and one for xp. The xp requirements are lower and the game runs smoother (64 bit aside). And then there is user account control (actual designed to annoy you.. http://www.crn.com/software/207100934 couldn’t make that up).

It’s like a realy pretty car with a beater engine, soft brakes and leaf suspension. Oh but it does look good on the runway floor.

Gripes about vista are legitimate. You just have a realy good and likely expensive system…like mine.

23. DDS says:

I think Windows 7 is better than Vista even in beta stage.
Uses much less memory. Runs smooth even on my older secondary PC (Athlon 2600XP+, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9550 video).
I do have a quad core and 6GB ram in my primary PC, I used Vista Ultimate x64 for a while, but later switched to XP x64. I will probably not come back to Vista and wait for Windows 7 final release.

24. Robert says:

Kevin, that 4TB was overkill for your average gamer. And so is the 8GB of ram. Max needed is 6GB and that’s only because Vista UT needs 3GB… Otherwise 4GB is enough for all the other OS. You mentioned the specs not being overkill for Crysis. That’s a GPU issue. Those 4TB and 8GB of ram is overkill even for the all mighty Crysis.

26. metaal mike perth says:

i only use Vista x64 becoz it has Directx10 for my games.
my computer is quad core processor and 8GB ram big graphic card and no problems with VISTA.

however i dont see any reason to upgrade from XP x64 to Vista x64 except for gamers who NEED to use directx10.

27. Kevin says:

Robert, ordinary latency ram is realy cheap right now so 8 gigs in a gaming machine is hard to call overkill.

Yes his 4 tb is overkill, but no more expensive than duel vraptors. So thats not realy the issue either.

The majority of that rig is not overkill…stupid yes (duel core graphics processors are not cathing on and programers arn’t threading for it). You’d be better off with two ordinary graphic cards for the price…

28. Smith says:

Does anyone know if this copy can take updates?

29. Rummydog says:

Trojan

30. Smith says:

OK, there are a bunch of links to different spots to download this, from a group that’s released Vista copies before. Why are you telling people it’s a trojan? You tested every file here or something?
Anyway, can someone tell me if this copy takes updates ok (including the genuine advantage update)?

31. Tracker says:

4TB is nothing for hard drive space… I’ve got 4x 1.5TB hard drives (6TB Total Storage) plus 4 external 1TB hard drives.

Currently I’ve got about 450GB free out of the lot of it (including the external storage)

But I also have almost every episode of every TV show that’s came out in the last 5 years and almost every good movie (and some bad ones). So yes, I download a ton of video, so it’s worth it. Besides, if you think what you spend on cable/satellite in the last 4 years, you could probably buy 30TB of hard drive space if you just downloaded your TV.

8GB of ram is major overkill if you’re running a 32 bit OS. Really it’s overkill for any kind of system. You really see very few performance gains for anything over 4GB of ram.

Other then that, as I posted in a previous post, Vista runs perfect on my Dual Core 3800+ with 2GB of ram. For all the people arguing about Vista, yes, Windows 7 will most likely be much better, but there’s nothing wrong with Vista for now. Of course, it’s no Linux. If you want a heavy duty OS that does practically everything (if you’re not a complete moron) then just run Linux. It uses half the resources of XP but has all the nice options you’d find in Vista.

Yes there are a few annoyances with Vista. But if people weren’t so stupid, they wouldn’t have to put in all the stupid features. And if you’re complaining about the stupid features, you probably need those stupid features (or else you would be smart enough to take the 5 minutes it takes to disable everything you don’t like)

If they were cars, Windows would be the German Family Sedan that leaks oil, breaks down a lot but is cheap to repair. Linux would be the Super-tank that does 300 miles per hour, will go 100 miles on a thimble of oil and hardly ever breaks down at all that they’re giving away for free at the dealerships.

So in conclusion… Lots of hard drive space is good. XP is good if you’ve got a crappy computer, Vista is good if you’re not cheap and milking a 5 year old system, and instead of arguing which version of the crappy "family sedan" leaks the least amount of oil, you should just get a free tank.

@ 28 Smith: Yes, this release group makes a release you can update just fine. But make sure you check which updates you install (there’s something that checks for cracked copies and ‘warns’ you about it) but as long as you just right click on that update and choose to not show it again, you’ll be fine.

@29 Rummydog: Your pants are on fire.

32. Kevin says:

For a gaming computer running vista 64 eight is far from overkill. Also if your a gamer you prefer higher speed hard drives, and sacrifice gigs for it. You’d also get those eight gigs in low latency.

It’s all about what your trying to do with your computer.

Vista has problems- caused by them trying to sell it. They glitzed it up and dumbed it down, hence making it take up valuable resource and be difficult to do more technical things. It’s like a volvo dressed up as a farrari…only the locks don’t work, and the brake lines are cut.

If by Linux you mean all and any open platform unix base…well yes, but no games and skill is required. Try teaching your mom ubuntu (and thats the easiest one…its a nightmare).

Apple has its merrits, hardware isn’t one of them…neither is the propriatary write design (its a bitch to recover data from a mac hardrive).

Unless your a gamer, there is no real reason to switch over to vista, unless your a nerd there is no way your running unix and unless your a student or an artist you don’t want a freakin mac.

Any questions?

33. Tracker says:

Actually, my mom just turned 55 this year, never turned a computer on in her entire life, and I did teach her ubuntu (in less than 2 hours)

— It’s NOT rocket science —

It’s actually really easy to learn some versions of Linux. They’ve got really good driver support these days, and it’s easier then ever to figure out. It doesn’t give cryptic error messages like Windows and it’s a lot harder to screw it up (No viruses/spyware/etc)

I’m running a Quad Boot OS. I’ve got Vista for gaming, OSX for graphic design/web design for my computer/web design company, and a couple distro’s of linux for everything else I do.

Well I guess its harder to teach a mom linux if she’s used to windows… or maybe your mom is just realy smart idk. Personal experiance tells me your lucky.

Its easier to screw it up in some ways, such as program associations being lost due to file name changes… you know…

Drive support is still lacking for cutting edge gpu and even pro audio cards (hey balanced speakers count). There are all sorts of reasons to not use switch to ubuntu…mostly games…yeah.

Trying to get the best of all worlds I see… try throwing a couple vraps in there as your main and use the larger drives as storage. Low density drives have longer lives and improve performance. Just some random advice.

@ 31 (Tracker): Thanks for the reply. That\’s unfortunate that it works that way by having the warning show. The old Vista copy I have is able to take the genuine validation update with no issues or warnings. Was hoping I could find the same type of copy.

Thought it might try it online but:

"The browser you are using does not support ActiveX controls."

No my browser doesn’t…there is a reason for that.

37. Tracker says:

@ Smith: Oh it works just fine, it’s just the crack they’re using is based on the Dell activation (I think it’s dell) that are shipped with all Dell computers. Basically they’re using that loophole in the OS to do it. The software doesn’t actually disable anything, but it’ll give you a nag if you install it. As long as you disable that particular update, it’ll be like a genuine copy.

This will update through windows update through browser. It won’t end up with any illiegle copy promt, It won’t disable any feature in vista. It uses the bios hack way of activaiting. Never fails windows genine advantage or what ever’s it’s called now. and as for the big discussion on gaming systems and there spec. and needing something like there spec to run vista. stop bragging about your gaming system etc. Just finished building have we lads and feeling the need to do abit of bragging.
