If you haven’t seen this movie, my question to you is why not? This is an all time classic, directed by the legend that is Alfred Hitchcock and has ratings to match. It’s not often you see a rating of 100% from Rotten Tomatoes, and this is currently ranked at #30 on IMDB’s highest rated movies of all time.

Quality: Quality is really very good, the snapshots don’t do it justice. You’re never going to get the quality of modern day HD movies due to the older filming equipment, but a very nice rip all the same, with 5.1 AC3 audio too.

Synopsis: North by Northwest is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest works. The master of suspense is at it again as we follow the protagonist, a middle-aged Madison Avenue advertising executive Roger O. Thornhill, who is mistaken for a government agent by a gang of spies. He gets involved in a series of misadventures and is pursued across the States by both the spies and the government whilst being helped by a beautiful blonde.

Like you said… "You’re never going to get the quality of modern day HD movies due to the older filming equipment…" so why the massive file size? Typical scene overkill. Ridiculous. A DVD5 size would have been more than good enough.

@ Des : scene has rules about file size due to running length. And keep in mind, this a 1959 film, which means lots more grain and screen artifacts. That could explain the higher bitrate needed. And it’s not overkill by any means; if you are that bothered, look for a dvdrip.

Filming equipment is not really at fault here. The film rolls are old and worn, they degrade over time and they have no digital masters from a mint film roll. If you have a HDTV you should benefit from the higher resolution, regardless of how good the transfer looks.

on msgboards around the net small but quality oriented groups are popping up that re-encode scene releases to 1/2 the size while retaining high quality levels. check em out if the steep file size bothers you (as it does me too for a 720 offering)

For those getting the DVDrips from usenet: North.by.Northwest.1959.iNTERNAL.DVDRip.XviD-MHQ seems to have a lot of parts missing on the Astraweb server. If you don’t have an alternative usenet server (eg. Giganews), then you can either complete it from a torrent (find one by googling one of the rar subset filenames), or just download a different rip.
