I’m upset. And I mean I’m really, genuinely upset that IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes have users that are so god damned tasteless that they’ll give a talentless piece of trash like Tarantino a 65% rating for something as truly bad as Death proof, which puts this in the same ball park as that. Why does that make me angry? Why? Why? Let me tell you why. This is John Logan writing at his very best. This is the guy who wrote the screenplay for Gladiator and The Time Machine. This is some of the best work from the director who brought us Legends of the Fall, Traffic and I am Sam. This, THIS is Tom Cruise when he decides to stop that inane grinning and do something that is on the par of Vanilla Sky, and this…This is Ken Watanabe being his brilliant, enigmatic self in a film that I personally think stands testament as some of the best any of the people I’ve cited have ever done.
This film is the kind of cinema we simply won’t see anymore, as Hollywood decides more and more often that we’re all teenagers and need to be force fed rubbish like Twilight. This is one of those films that people will look back on in fifteen to twenty years, and wonder how they missed it all that time ago. I’ll tell you why. Harry Potter or Edward or whatever the devil his name is isn’t in it, and this film is not for people who don’t like to think about the context of their film beyond the deep moral bullshit that we’re deluged with on a daily basis now, whether it be on TV or cinema. So for me, for this film to be given a mere 65% or 7.8% is…profoundly saddening to say the least.
Do yourselves a favour; Download it now, this very minute and watch Tom Cruise in one of his most likeable roles to date if you must watch it for a face, and stay for the calm, enigmatic lessons Ken Watanabe has to teach as he guides his student on a journey that changes him profoundly. It’s rare these days to see actors immersed in roles that they really care for, and yet here is an example. Put twilight down. Watch a future classic.
Quality: The Last Samurai was always a visually exquisite film, but it really is a thrill to see it in high definition with fantastic sound. THIS, my friends, really does the sound editing and Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack real justice.
Synopsis: After centuries of relying on hired samurai for national defense, the Japanese monarchy has decided to do away with the warriors in favor of a more contemporary military. Tom Cruise stars as Nathan Algren, a veteran of the U.S. Civil War who is hired by the Emperor Meiji to train an army capable of wiping out the samurai. But when Algren is captured by the samurai and taught about their history and way of life, he finds himself conflicted over who he should be fighting alongside.

SEE?! I’m not alone!
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:39 pm
so…war…is this movie worth dling? ;P
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Just to clear a few things up "war". Zwick did not direct "traffic" as you state in the comments, if my memory serves me it was Soderberg. Sorry my spelling is bad. I also agree with you on Ken wanntabe but that’s about it for this film. Nice post though. Keep up the quality work.
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:45 pm
@ War - I totally agree with you - here here!
Wonderful addition!
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:46 pm
I said the director who brought. Meaning I’m well aware that he didn’t direct, but it would have sounded less impressive in my rant to say "this is the man who directed this but produced…"
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:46 pm
If you want to promote the writer don’t point out a piece of rediculous garbage like The Time Machine - that was literally the worst film I’ve ever had the displeasure of paying money to see.
Also: Zwick did not direct two of those three movies you listed.
He did, however, make Blood Diamond, which was even better than this film!
One more thing: Calling Tarantino a talentless piece of trash entirely negates anything serious you have to say about film. Deathproof may not be so great, but come on. You just sound ignorant saying that about him in general.
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:48 pm
Sorry war. I see you stated "from the director who made" I assumed you as well meant directed these movies as well. Zwick did produce all of those movies so in a way you are right. Sorry about that
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:51 pm
thanks for the post but usenet search link doesn’t return any result…
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:53 pm
@7 Tarantino isn’t a good director. He’s someone who simply makes a lot of money indulging people in their whim for mindless violence. His films follow the same, tired format WITHOUT deviation, and it gets tiresome. How does that invalidate anything I’ve said? And again, you need to sit down and learn about context. If I wanted to say he’d directed said films, I would have…But he DID bring them to you as the producer of said films. Or are you saying the role of producer is less valid than any other member of the film set crew?
As for the time machine, it was a valiant effort, showed much more potential than we saw in the final cut, and was, to say the least, a good attempt to update a classic that in my opinion didn’t need updating anyway as it’s a timeless classic. Much like war of the worlds really. But hey. What can you do?
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Sorry Tarantino’s movies are more popcorn flicks with no real story and lots of cursing!
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:58 pm
I gree with the reviewer, I recently saw this on TV a few weeks ago, don’t know how I missed it when it first came out, but I am sure glad I watched such a great film. Funnily enough I thought the same when I saw this.. why don’t they make films as good as this any more?
I’ll be downloading this when you have some RS links, thanks
November 2nd, 2009 at 7:58 pm
@Jack - Thank you my friend, couldn’t have said it better myself without lots of cussing of my own.
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:27 pm
My brother kept watching this movie (Video Tape) for 1.5 month every night. The movie is great and awesome, but come on not every freakin night. He kept the movie running and all night and always slept before it endded. Made me want to kill him. Still, this is the best movie for Tom in my opinion, mainly cuz he looks like Solid Snake.
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:35 pm
@devedo - your brother knows an awesome film when he sees it.
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:42 pm
Calling Tarantino a talentless hack is a joke. The guy has made hit film after hit film and his last movie was superb. If he is a talentless hack I would hate to think what that makes us.
Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean its rubbish.
As for The Last Samurai… it is highly recommended and a must watch for any movie lover.
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:45 pm
I just can’t take someone’s opinion seriously when they talk about Tarantino’s work being "popcorn flicks".
Have you ever seen Pulp Fiction? Reservoir Dogs? If you can’t see anything but mindless violence in those two films, clearly you are unfit to gauge deepness, or even context of a truly great movie.
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:54 pm
@ 16 & 17 - and you both obviously don’t know what the living fuck you’re talking about. Box office success does NOT make a good film. As an example, The fountain and Moon, both extraordinarily beautiful examples of cinema haven’t grossed anywhere NEAR the amount of money that Reservoir dogs has, and yet it’s loved. Both are on the slate to be added to criterion.
So what? He’s made hit film after hit film. Yeah he’s made a hit film, in a society where we deem it perfectly ok to sit our kids down in front of grand theft auto and expect the shiny magic window in the corner to teach our kids their moral values. We’re talking a man who basically follows (and never deviates) from the same formula film after film, and yet you lap it up! At least his partner in crime, Rodriguez has more going for him in the fact that his films and methodology with his cinema tends to have a story and a clear idea for cinematography behind it; Tarantino however doesn’t even deviate from the kind of camera angles he chooses. I ask you, when did we as a people become so desensitised to depicted violence that we would rather choose a film that doesn’t really have an object to the violence or drug use other than to glorify it to the detriment of our own moral values, over films that have a genuine interest in pushing the cinematic boundaries? In what universe can Tarantino be considered a better, or even an equal director to the likes of Scorcese, Aronofsky, Spielberg, even Lucas when he can get his shit together, or Mel Brooks for comedic value?
I’ll tell you where. It doesn’t exist, because he’s a talentless, piece of shit hack director/writer that uses violence as a masturbation technique to vent his own sick and perverse desires.
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:02 pm
you could’ve just listed the films he actually did direct like glory and courage under fire. cruise is good but he’s been better in several other films. the main reason critics didn’t like this film so much is because it is very similar to dances with wolves. it is very well directed and acted but it is also derivative. but this is just my opinion, and the opinions of hundreds of critics believe tarantino is a good director. death proof may not be on par with his other flicks but there’s no denying pulp fiction is one of the best films made in the past 30 years, and compared to his later films it has a minimal amount of violence, considerably less violence than the last samurai even.
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:04 pm
it’s a matter of perspective. You could argue that pulp fiction made it onto a criterion transfer because at least for the most part it was original to a degree. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti violence, I’m just against mindless, pointless aggression for the sake of getting the almighty dollar, you know? And you’re right, I could have and will take that board in the future.
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
I really don’t know why you’re ranting about this movie. It was a great box office success internationally. It holds a 7.8 rating on imdb which is great considering how horribly flawed a site it is and a decent rating on rottentomatoes, 85% community, which just shows you how wrong critics can be. The moral of this post is not to follow critic reviews and imdb ratings as gospel but instead use them as a very loose guideline to see if a movie might appeal to you. Of course my own statement can be considered flawed because a horribly rated and reviewed movie like Transformers 2 can rake in over $800 million, but such is the nature of movies and opinion.
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:10 pm
Transformers 2 was horrible, just horrible. It’s like they took all the things about the already dire first film that made it bad, and put more of that in the sequel. As for my rant with the rating, it deserves higher; it certainly doesn’t deserve to be given the same kind of rating as something like deathproof.
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:12 pm
come on ppl.. its feking movie… watch it and get on with your life.. everyone has individual taste .. where is my megashares downloading link
…:-)
in my openion i don;t care who directs it…. I watch movie n then decide abt it worth… particularly when I m DOWNLOADING it FREE…
War i have to say u justify ur nick..
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:22 pm
we don’t agree with you.
Box office sales has to be ONE of the measures for success. It would be foolish to think it isn’t when people all over the world are paying to watch a movie. The mere fact so many people want to watch a movie cannot be dismissed.
Tarantino has been hailed by many of those directors you mentioned and if you want to talk about camera angles then Tarantino’s inspirations range from Scorcese to Sergio Leone.
But you seem to think that all Tarantino’s movies are just about violence and drug use which is way off the mark and shows ignorance. Maybe your some kind of religious man that is offended by such viewing (you don’t have to watch his films) or maybe your some dude who went to film school and turns his nose up at popular movies.
At the end of the day you cant deny that Tarantino makes entertaining movies… if he didn’t he wouldn’t generate so much money at the box office. If you cant see that then theres is no point to this debate.
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:26 pm
@Hitman - I’m not a religious man at all, I merely think that society has become desensitised to graphic violence, partially thanks to the likes of oliver stone and quentin tarantino - and while, sure, on principle box office earnings surely has to be taken into account as a success, but should that be the only criteria?
Finally, go ahead. what do you see when you see a tarantino film? enlighten me.
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:48 pm
It is true that society has become desensitised to graphic violence but you can say the same thing about sex. While men like Tarentino and Stone did contribute to this they were merely following on from a trend started in the 70’s-80’s with films like The Godfather, Taxi Driver and Scarface. When people get desensitised to the kind of violence in those films other movie makers are going to raise the bar and that is what Tarantino and Stone did.
Your right that box office success isn’t the only criteria but it is one of them. Movies like Moon may not have done so well at the cinema but remember that it is likely to sell very well on DVD and Blu Ray.
What Tarentino has done is try to tell stories in a different way. With Reservoir dogs he told the story of a botched jewellery heist without even showing the attempted robbery. In Pulp Fiction he rearranged the timeline of the movie to engage the audience and make some scenes more poignant (Jules discussing his retirement). In Inglorious Basterds he intertwined several stories to make a great finale scene that had many viewers on the edge of there seats.
The violence and black comedy only add to his story telling technique.
He isnt everyones cup of tea and I have many friends that don’t like his movies but he is good at what he does and he has the box office figures, the awards and the critical acclaim to back him up.

Sorry to interrupt all this mental masturbation, but does anyone have a link to an NZB for this?
November 2nd, 2009 at 11:30 pm
The style of this movie tries to match the foreign films, (the mostly quiet movies, as in few songs) like Twilight Samurai. The Last Samurai is a good film, but it’s not exactly mainstream, so naturally, the 65% at RT is a result of such.
November 2nd, 2009 at 11:47 pm
The only thing that disappointed me about The Last Samurai was the final battle. It was less than impressive (not nearly as epic as the battles in Braveheart or even the final battle in Glory, which Zwick directed). I still enjoyed the movie and recommend it. My favorite Ed Zwick movies are Glory and Blood Diamond.
About Tarantino… you either love him or hate him. There is no denying his skill when it comes to dialogue and creating memorable characters. To call him a bad director, though, is ludicrous. He takes risks in all areas and he usually makes them work. His early genius was about making you think his movies were more violent than they were. Reservior Dogs was tame but through dialogue and unique camera placement the audience was made to think it was more violent than it was. Pulp Fiction was the same way. With Tarantino you know you are going to see something different and that’s why audiences who love his movies will always keep coming back.
Trying to compare Tarantino and Zwick is absurd. I think Tarantino’s name was only mentioned by War to strike a chord among those of us who like Tarantino and to get a reaction from us. In other words, it was a staff member just being a troll.

Watched this when it just came out..
Didn’t really like it at that time, but that was prolly because I saw about 20 flicks a week. Didn’t like much then
I recall Tom being a bad-ass in this flick, rather than the slick good-guy he always tend to play. That was a nice twist.
Will give it another shot when I have more DL-DVDR…
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:36 am
@ War, I don’t want to get into an argument about the merits of Tarantino, each to their on, but one thing, did you watch deathproof the whole way through?
I watched this and Planet Terror as part of the grindhouse release (ie both films back to back), ended up switching it off halfway through, wasn’t at all impressed, but many people have said to me that after finishing the whole thing, its actually rather good, Can’t say I’ve rewatched myself, but would be nice to hear others opinions on this!
PS good to see a reasonable conversation on the comments page for once, nice debate
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:38 am
Sorry War, but nothing I said had anything to do with a movie being a hit. Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are just both great movies, better than the one you posted.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:11 am
this is my number 2 favorite movie of all time, right behind The Shawshank Redemption! Not saying this movie isnt as good, just a tiny tiny bit less win, but so little its hard to tell the difference.
This is what movies nowadays should strive to be!
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:27 am
War I agree with you on the fountain and moon as well as on twilight and harry potter but really, the last samurai? The last samurai wasn’t japanese but Tom Cruise? Tom fucking cruise of all people? Come on. Sure it’s a gem compared to twilight, but honestly.. what movie isn’t?

Box Office success doesn’t make a movie a good film and neither does a good IMDB score , lot of great movies with terrible ratings or didn’t crack even 50 million in the US but wtfever get over it. This whole back and forth is so f*cking ugh w/e.

So, here it is: Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Everyone has their own likes/dislikes. I happen to love this film. It is one of my favorite films because of the character development. The way 2 people from completely different background cultures and belief have such a profound and life changing effect on each other is brilliant. Ken Watanabe is spectacular, to say the least. And though I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan, he also delivered a good performance.
Cruise being in this movie did not dissuade me from watching it when it came out in theaters. People need to be more open minded. Stop making decisions based on what others say. Honestly, I have never been one to go by what critics think.
There are times that I do want and expect a work of art from my cinematic experience, such is the case in this movie. However, there are also times that I like to watch a movie for its light-hearted entertainment value. Sometimes, I just want a good laugh and to be entertained.
Like I said before, just be more open to watching movies, you might surprise yourself with what you actually enjoy!

@War: think why people "hate" (perhaps too strong a word) is because they tend to weigh historical accurary higher, and "hate" the typical of hollywood "USA! USA! USA!" on the cost of massacring the real story behind it and in this case another culture. And with those glasses on I think the movie sucks too. But for pure entertainment yeah not.

I sit down at my computer and read the comments accompanying the original post. I have a little "lol" because I think the author was writing ironically. (seriously go back and read it that way, it’s quite good.)
Then I realise they are serious, and I am sad.
The end
(credits roll)
see? it’s not so hard to write a storyline that doesn’t horribly insult an entire culture and our intelligence.
